Instructions
- Retrieve current Cloudflare facts before citing limits, pricing, compatibility dates, or config fields. Prefer official Cloudflare docs, Wrangler schema, and package-local types over memory.
- Treat Workers as a Web API runtime first. Prefer
fetch, Request, Response, URL, crypto.subtle, Web Streams, and ExecutionContext. Do not assume Node.js built-ins are available unless the project explicitly enables Node compatibility and the library is known to work there.
- Define bindings in
wrangler.jsonc or wrangler.toml, then access them through the Worker env parameter. Keep secrets out of source control and use Wrangler secret management for sensitive values.
- Use Durable Objects when correctness depends on per-key coordination, ordered access, websocket fan-in, or strongly consistent local state. Use KV for read-heavy global lookups and D1 for relational data with SQL semantics.
- Push non-blocking side effects such as analytics, logging, cache writes, and webhooks into
ctx.waitUntil() so the response path stays fast.
- For Next.js on Cloudflare, validate the Cloudflare target directly instead of trusting
next build alone. A project can pass next build and still fail opennextjs-cloudflare build.
- When a Next.js 16 project deploys to Cloudflare through OpenNext, treat request interception as a runtime compatibility issue:
proxy.ts runs on the Node.js runtime in Next.js 16.
@opennextjs/cloudflare currently rejects Node.js middleware and fails the build with Node.js middleware is not currently supported. Consider switching to Edge Middleware.
- If that happens, move the interception logic back to
middleware.ts, rename the exported function from proxy to middleware, and keep the code Edge-safe.
- Accept the deprecation warning temporarily if Cloudflare compatibility is the higher priority than using the new file convention.
- After changing Next.js middleware/proxy behavior for Cloudflare, verify the emitted manifests:
.next/server/middleware-manifest.json should contain the middleware entry.
.next/server/functions-config-manifest.json should not contain /_middleware with runtime: "nodejs" if the build must stay Edge-compatible.

Best Practices
- Do: verify Cloudflare-specific builds with
npx opennextjs-cloudflare build or the repository's equivalent deploy/build script.
- Do: prefer small, runtime-safe dependencies and avoid packages that expect unrestricted Node.js APIs.
- Do: use
wrangler tail and platform logs when debugging deployment-only failures.
- Do: keep auth/session interception logic idempotent and compatible with the Edge runtime when targeting Cloudflare.
- Do not: assume Node middleware, custom servers, or filesystem-dependent libraries will work on Cloudflare.
- Do not: hardcode platform limits in advice unless they were retrieved during the current task.
Troubleshooting
Problem: opennextjs-cloudflare build fails with Node.js middleware is not currently supported. Consider switching to Edge Middleware.
Solution:
- Check whether the app uses
proxy.ts or another Node-runtime interception path.
- Rename
proxy.ts back to middleware.ts and rename export function proxy to export function middleware.
- Remove Node-only dependencies from that path.
- Re-run the Cloudflare build, not just
next build.
- Inspect
.next/server/middleware-manifest.json and .next/server/functions-config-manifest.json to confirm the project is emitting Edge middleware instead of Node middleware.
