Copy Style -- Application Writing Rules

Tone

• Direct, not corporate
• Confident, not arrogant
• Specific, not vague
• Write like you're explaining to a smart friend what you did and why it matters

Structure (Cover Letters)

1. Opening (1 sentence): Reference something specific about the company -- a product, a recent decision, a team's work. Not "I am excited to apply."
2. Middle (2-3 accomplishments): Each one has a number or specific outcome. Connect each to something the role needs.
3. Close (1 sentence): Direct ask. Not "I look forward to hearing from you."
4. Total: Under 250 words. If it's over, cut -- don't compress.

Banned Patterns

• Three-bullet symmetry (three items, each the same length and structure)
• "Passionate about [field]"
• "Proven track record of [gerund]"
• "I believe I would be a great fit"
• Restating the job description back at them
• Closing with "I look forward to discussing how I can contribute to your team"
• Starting more than one paragraph with "I"

Sentence Rules

• Vary sentence length. Follow a long sentence with a short one.
• No more than one em dash per 200 words.
• No semicolons in cover letters.
• Active voice. "I built the deployment pipeline" not "The deployment pipeline was built by me."
