Obsidian Bases - Database Views for Notes

Create database-like views to organize, filter, and visualize notes by their properties.

Creating Bases

Standalone file (.base extension): ![[filename.base]] or ![[filename.base#ViewName]]

Property Types

Properties come from three sources:

• status, author - note frontmatter (no prefix)
• file.name, file.mtime - file metadata (file. prefix)
• formula.days_old - computed in base definition (formula. prefix)

File properties: file.name (name without extension), file.path, file.folder, file.ctime (created), file.mtime (modified), file.size, file.tags, file.links

Filters

Operators: ==, !=, >, <, >=, <=, &&, ||, !

Common patterns:

file.hasTag("tag")              # Has tag
file.inFolder("Path")           # In folder
file.hasLink("Note")            # Links to note
file.mtime > now() - "7d"       # Modified in last week
'property != null'              # Has property value

Context reference: Use this.file to reference the containing note (useful for backlinks view).

String: .length, .toUpperCase(), .toLowerCase(), .contains("x")

Number: .toFixed(2), Math.floor(), Math.ceil(), Math.round()

Date: now(), today(), date("2025-01-15"), .format("YYYY-MM-DD"), .date()

Array: .length, .contains(v), .join(", "), .filter(v => ...), .mean()

Logic: if(cond, trueVal, falseVal), link("file"), icon("name")

Performance Tips

• Prefer file.links over file.backlinks (faster)
• Filter at global level when possible
• Avoid file.properties in large vaults
• Use limit: for large result sets
