Award Booking Playbook
Finding the space is the hard part. Most people give up because they search wrong. This skill covers the strategy; booking-process covers the execution once you find it.
When to search (timing windows by cabin)
| Cabin | Sweet spot | Why |
|---|
| First class | 330–355 days out | Airlines release first at booking open; it disappears fast |
| Business class | 30–60 days out | Second release window as departure nears and loads clear |
| Business class | 1–14 days out | Last-minute drops as revenue seats go unsold |
| Economy | Anytime | Abundant, flexible |
| Partner space | 11–15 months out | Some carriers release to partners at booking open |
Availability patterns by airline
| Airline | Pattern | Booking tip |
|---|
| ANA | Heavy availability 355 days out; drops by 30 days | Book at 355 days; call ANA direct |
| JAL | Business good 30–60 days out; First = call AA | AA.com for J; phone for F |
| Lufthansa | Almost never releases F to partners | Book via Miles&More directly if you have points |
| Cathay Pacific | Good J availability to HKG; set ExpertFlyer alert | Book via AA, BA, or Asia Miles |
| Air France | Monthly Flying Blue promos slash prices 25–40% | Wait for promo; set alert at flyingblue.com |
| Emirates | Releases to partners rarely; almost always must book Skywards direct | Build Skywards balance or use partner trick |
| Singapore | Suites/First almost never to partners; J sometimes via miles | KrisFlyer direct is the way |

Unlocking hidden availability
Technique: segment search
Instead of searching A→C direct, search A→B and B→C separately. Airlines often release segments that don't show on a connecting search.
Technique: nearby airports
LAX + SFO + SJC count as separate origin pools. JFK + EWR + LGA similarly. Mixing origins/destinations opens new routing options.
Technique: open jaw
Fly into one city, out of another. Award programs often price open-jaws the same as round trips.
Technique: mixed cabin
Book business outbound, economy return if only the outbound matters. Often significantly cheaper in points.
Technique: ExpertFlyer alert
Set an alert on the exact flight/date/booking class. Get notified the moment space opens. Best for flights where you have time but no space today.
Technique: call the airline directly
Some space only appears when you call. ANA, Singapore, and JAL occasionally hold seats not shown in search tools. Ask: "Do you see any [booking class] award availability on flight [number] on [date]?"
