Use this skill whenever writing the 'Featured work' description that appears on a Source Library collection page — the short editorial blurb beneath a highlighted book's title, author, and bibliographic stats. Trigger for any request to write, rewrite, or edit a featured-work blurb, curator's pick description, or highlighted-book caption for a collection. The output is about the BOOK itself (what it is, why it matters, what is distinctive about it), never about Source Library, translation, OCR, or digitisation.

Featured Work Description

The short editorial paragraph(s) under a collection's highlighted book. It sells the book, not the platform. Every featured description must answer one question above all: what makes THIS book worth stopping on?

The two rules that are easy to break

1. Never mention Source Library, translation, OCR, scanning, digitisation, "high resolution," or "we present." The description is about the work and its place in history. Access/translation facts live elsewhere on the page (badges, the works grid). If a draft contains "Source Library presents," "the first English translation," "in high resolution," or similar, delete that sentence.

2. Lead with what is distinctive about this specific book, not generic praise. The whole point of featuring a book is that it stands out. A description that could apply to any old book in the field has failed. Find the one thing only this book can claim.

Find the distinctive hook first

Before writing, identify the single most specific true thing about this book. Pick the strongest available:

• A first — first to do/show/describe something ("the first book devoted entirely to mushrooms").
• Foundational status — the work a whole field or tradition rests on, that later texts cite or build from ("the work that fixed the rules of fungal naming still in use," "the starting point for the legal naming of plants"). State what it founded and how it still anchors the field, not just the label "foundational."
• A method or making detail — how it was made, by whom, with what technique ("plates engraved and coloured by hand from living specimens").
• A scale or scope — a number that signals ambition ("catalogues some fourteen hundred drugs").
• An influence — what it shaped or how long it ruled ("the standard medical textbook for six hundred years").
• An origin or circumstance — who made it, where, under what conditions ("written in Polish during occupation, as an act of patriotism").
• A formal innovation — a way of presenting, organising, or seeing ("the first to use copper engraving for fungi").
• A vivid concrete feature — something physical and specific a reader can picture ("over a thousand woodcuts in a portable field format").

If you can't name one distinctive thing, the book may be the wrong featured pick, or you need to research it further before writing.

Structure

Two short paragraphs, ~2–3 sentences each (one tight paragraph for minor works).

1. What it is + its distinction — name the work's identity and lead with or land on its distinctive hook, anchored by one verifiable fact.
2. Why that matters — what the distinction meant: its consequence, influence, or lasting role, ending on something concrete.

Rules

1. Book only. No platform, no translation/OCR/scan/resolution language. (See top rules.)
2. Lead with substance; adjectives can stay. Describe what the work is and did, grounded in fact. Evocative words (beautiful, poetic, intricate, austere) are fine when accurate and they don't carry the sentence alone. The rule is balance: don't let praise replace the factual hook. "An illustrated flora in more than six hundred hand-coloured plates, among the most beautiful of its century" works because the beauty rides on a fact. "The most beautiful atlas ever made" alone does not.
3. Distinctive over generic. Every sentence should be truer of this book than of its neighbours. Cut anything that would read identically under a different title. Adjectives are welcome when they're specific to this work, not interchangeable filler.
4. One concrete anchor minimum. A real number, method, date, or first. Vague praise alone is weak.
5. Stats live in the stat line, not the prose. The page already shows author, date, volumes, plates, format. Don't restate them; the prose adds the meaning the stats can't (why the plate count matters, not just that it exists).
6. Verify every fact. Dates, counts, "first to…", influence claims. The featured slot is the most-read text on the page.
7. No AI tropes. No "stands as a testament," "not just X but Y," rule-of-three lists, em-dashes as default beats, empty intensifiers (truly, deeply).
8. No foil framing. Describe the book on its own terms; don't define it against a rival, region, or tradition ("unlike European work," "before the West"). (Consistent with the collection-intro rules.)
9. Tense: past for what it did ("issued from 1780"), present for what it still is ("it remains a reference").
10. Plain, confident, a little understated. Scholarly, not salesy.

Worked examples (each leads on a different kind of distinction)

Histoire des Champignons de la France — Bulliard, 1780–1791 (making detail)

An illustrated flora of the fungi of France, issued in parts from 1780 and gathered into volumes in 1791, with more than six hundred plates engraved and coloured by hand from living specimens.

Among the first works to render fungi in full, accurate colour, it remained a standard reference for identification well into the following century.

Theatrum Fungorum — Sterbeeck, 1675 (a first)

The first book devoted entirely to mushrooms, written in Dutch rather than Latin and illustrated with the author's own copper engravings.

By putting the fungi of the Low Countries before ordinary readers in their own language, it moved the study of mushrooms out of the scholar's library and into the field.

Śluzowce (Mycetozoa) — Rostafiński, 1874 (origin/circumstance)

The first comprehensive monograph of the slime moulds, describing every species then known, with keys, classification, and a full Latin and Polish nomenclature.

Its author wrote in Polish at a time when doing so was itself an act of national defiance, a choice that placed a foundational scientific work beyond the reach of most of its intended readers for generations.

Canon of Medicine — Avicenna (influence)

A complete system of medicine that organised diagnosis, drugs, and treatment into a single ordered framework.

It served as the standard medical textbook for some six hundred years, taught to physicians across three continents long after its author's death.

Systema Mycologicum — Fries, 1821 (foundational)

A systematic ordering of all known fungi that became the legal starting point for their naming. The classifications it set down are still the reference against which fungal names are validated today.

Nearly every later work in the field traces its nomenclature to this one, making it less a book that was read than a foundation others built on.

Anti-examples

✗ "Source Library presents both volumes in high resolution, alongside the first complete English translation."

About the platform and access, not the book. Cut.

✗ "A significant and important work that deepened understanding of the subject and remains valuable to scholars today."

Could describe any book. No distinctive hook, no fact, pure filler.
