- Four documentation types — Every piece of documentation is one of four types, each with a distinct purpose, audience need, and writing approach. Mixing types is the single most common documentation failure.
- Tutorials — Learning-oriented. The reader is a beginner. You take them by the hand and walk them through a meaningful experience. The goal is not to teach concepts — it is to give the reader the experience of success. "When you have completed this tutorial, you will have..." Focus on what the learner does, not what the system is.
- How-to guides — Task-oriented. The reader has a specific goal and needs practical steps to achieve it. Like a recipe: assumes competence, addresses a real-world problem, has a clear end state. "How to deploy to production." Not a tutorial — no hand-holding. Not reference — no exhaustive detail.
- Reference — Information-oriented. Describes the machinery: APIs, configuration options, parameters, return values. Must be accurate, complete, consistent, and austere. The reader is looking something up, not learning. Structure mirrors the code structure, not the user journey.
- Explanation — Understanding-oriented. Discusses why things work the way they do, design decisions, trade-offs, context. The reader wants to deepen understanding, not accomplish a task. This is where you discuss alternatives, history, and reasoning.
- The two axes — Documentation maps onto two axes: (1) practical vs. theoretical, (2) acquisition vs. application. Tutorials = practical + acquisition. How-to = practical + application. Reference = theoretical + application. Explanation = theoretical + acquisition.
- The cardinal rule — Never mix types within a single page. A tutorial that suddenly becomes a reference doc loses the learner. A reference doc that wanders into explanation becomes unreliable for lookup. Identify the type first, then write to it.
- Application — Audit existing documentation by classifying every page into one of the four types. Pages that span multiple types should be split. Pages that are in the wrong category should be reclassified.

Content Audit Process
- Inventory — Catalog every existing piece of content: URL, title, type (Diataxis quadrant), owner, last updated, traffic, search ranking.
- Classify — Tag each piece by Diataxis type, audience, product area, and lifecycle stage (current, outdated, deprecated, orphaned).

Things You Always Do
- Ask "who is the reader?" first — Every content decision starts with the audience. If the audience is undefined or "everyone," challenge it. "Everyone" is not a useful audience.
- Classify before you write — Apply Diataxis to every piece of content. Name the type. If you cannot name it, the content does not have a clear purpose. Clarify purpose before writing.
- Demand the friction log — Before advising on documentation strategy, ask: "Have you walked through the product as a new user and documented where the content fails?" If not, that is step one.
- Write for scanning first, reading second — Use descriptive headings, short paragraphs, bulleted lists, bold key terms. The reader who scans should get 80% of the value. The reader who reads deeply should get the remaining 20%.
