Understanding Grief - Modern Perspectives

Beyond the Five Stages (Kubler-Ross Revisited)

Elisabeth Kubler-Ross's five stages (denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance) were originally developed to describe the experience of people facing their own terminal diagnosis, not those who were bereaved. While these stages resonated with many, modern grief research has expanded our understanding significantly.

WHAT WE NOW KNOW ABOUT GRIEF:

  1. Grief is not linear
     There are no orderly "stages" that everyone passes through.
     You may feel acceptance on Tuesday and rage on Wednesday.
     You may cycle through emotions for years. This is normal.

  2. Grief does not have a timeline
     "It's been a year, you should be over it" is harmful and false.
     Grief changes shape over time but does not necessarily end.
     Some losses you carry forever - and learn to carry differently.

  3. There is no "right way" to grieve
     Some people cry constantly. Some rarely cry.
     Some want to talk about their loss. Some cannot.
     Some grieve publicly. Some grieve privately.
     None of these is more valid than the others.

  4. Grief is not just sadness
     Grief can include: anger, guilt, relief, numbness, anxiety,
     confusion, physical pain, exhaustion, loneliness, yearning,
     and even moments of joy or laughter.

  5. Grief can be experienced for losses beyond death
     Divorce, estrangement, job loss, health changes, miscarriage,
     pet loss, loss of identity, loss of safety, loss of a dream.
     These griefs are valid even if society does not always recognize them.

The Dual Process Model (Stroebe & Schut)

A more accurate model of how people actually grieve:

  BOTH sides are necessary. Neither is avoidance or dwelling.

Continuing Bonds Theory

The old model said: "Let go and move on."
The current understanding: "Find a new way to maintain your connection."

Continuing bonds means:
  - Talking about the person who died
  - Keeping meaningful objects
  - Visiting significant places
  - Continuing traditions
  - Feeling their influence on your decisions
  - Sharing memories with others who loved them
  - Writing to them
  - Celebrating their birthday or anniversary

This is not "holding on" in an unhealthy way.
This is integrating your love for someone into your ongoing life.
The relationship changes form but does not have to end.

Coping Strategies

Immediate Grief (First Days and Weeks)

YOUR ONLY JOB RIGHT NOW:
  - Survive each day
  - Accept help
  - Be gentle with yourself

BASIC NEEDS (prioritize these):

  - Crying unexpectedly, or not crying at all
  - Difficulty believing it happened
  - Wanting to be alone, or being terrified of being alone
  - Laughing or feeling moments of normalcy (not disrespectful - human)
  - Sleep disruption (too much or too little)
  - Appetite changes
  - Replaying events or conversations

Ongoing Grief (Weeks, Months, Years)

STRATEGIES THAT HELP MANY PEOPLE:

  EMOTIONAL:
  - Allow yourself to feel whatever you feel without judgment
  - Name your emotions: "Right now I feel angry" or "This is yearning"
  - Create a ritual (lighting a candle, visiting a place, writing a letter)
  - Talk about the person - say their name; it is not taboo
  - Join a grief support group (shared experience reduces isolation)
  - Consider grief therapy (especially EMDR, complicated grief therapy)
  - Journal - write to your person, write about your pain, write about memories

  PHYSICAL:
  - Grief lives in the body; gentle movement helps process it
  - Walking, yoga, swimming - nothing aggressive unless that helps you
  - Watch for self-medicating with alcohol or substances
  - Maintain basic health appointments
  - Be aware that grief affects the immune system

  PRACTICAL:
  - Reduce obligations where possible
  - Ask for specific help ("Can you bring dinner Tuesday?")
  - Use a planner - grief brain makes you forgetful
  - Delegate what you can
  - Be strategic about difficult days (anniversaries, holidays)

  SOCIAL:
  - Let people know what you need (they often do not know how to help)
  - It is okay to decline social invitations without guilt
  - It is also okay to want normalcy and fun
  - Protect yourself from people who minimize your grief
  - Seek out people who can hold space for your pain

Navigating Grief Triggers

COMMON TRIGGERS:
  - Songs, smells, places associated with the person
  - Anniversaries, birthdays, holidays
  - Milestones the person will miss (graduations, weddings, births)
  - Seeing someone who looks like them
  - Unexpected moments (finding their handwriting, hearing a voicemail)
  - "Empty chair" moments (holidays, family events)

HOW TO NAVIGATE TRIGGERS:
  1. Anticipate when possible (plan for holidays and anniversaries)
  2. Have an exit strategy for overwhelming moments
  3. Create new rituals that honor the person
  4. Give yourself permission to leave events if needed
  5. Carry a comfort item
  6. Have a trusted person you can text or call
  7. It is okay to cry. It is also okay to excuse yourself.
  8. Triggers will become less intense over time (not gone, but softer)

Supporting Others in Grief

What to Say

HELPFUL:
  "I'm so sorry."
  "I don't know what to say, but I'm here."
  "I love you and I'm not going anywhere."
  "Tell me about them." (If they want to talk)
  "There's no right way to do this."
  "What do you need right now?"
  "I'm bringing dinner Tuesday. What can't you eat?"
  "[Name of person who died]..." - say their name.

DO NOT SAY:
  "Everything happens for a reason."
  "They're in a better place."
  "At least they're not suffering."
  "I know how you feel." (You don't.)
  "You need to be strong."
  "It's been [X months], you should be moving on."
  "God never gives you more than you can handle."
  "Let me know if you need anything." (Too vague; they won't ask.)

INSTEAD OF "Let me know if you need anything," TRY:
  "I'm going to the grocery store - what can I get you?"
  "I'll pick up the kids on Wednesday."
  "I'm dropping off food tonight. I'll leave it on the porch."
  "I'll sit with you this afternoon. You don't need to talk."

Practical Ways to Help

IMMEDIATE (first 1-2 weeks):
  - Bring food (in disposable containers they don't have to return)
  - Help with phone calls and logistics
  - Manage the flow of visitors if needed
  - Walk the dog, mow the lawn, pick up mail
  - Handle meals for children
  - Stay overnight if they don't want to be alone
  - Help with funeral/memorial arrangements if asked
  - Answer the door/phone so they don't have to

ONGOING (weeks and months later - THIS IS WHEN SUPPORT DISAPPEARS):
  - Check in regularly, not just the first week
  - Remember the anniversary, birthday, and holidays
  - Say the deceased person's name - they want to hear it
  - Invite them to things without pressure to attend
  - Continue normal friendship activities
  - Ask how they're really doing (and listen to the answer)
  - Offer specific help at predictable difficult times

Supporting Grieving Children

WHAT CHILDREN NEED:
  - Honest, age-appropriate information (do not say "went to sleep" or "went away")
  - Reassurance that they are safe and cared for
  - Permission to feel all emotions (including anger and confusion)
  - Routine and normalcy as much as possible
  - Adults who model that it is okay to be sad
  - Repeated reassurance that the death was not their fault
  - Opportunities to remember and honor the person
  - Professional support if behavior changes significantly

BY AGE:
  Under 5:   May not understand permanence. May ask when person is coming back.
             Repeat simple truths gently. Maintain routine.
  6-11:      Beginning to understand death is permanent. May have fears about
             other people dying. May act out or withdraw. Answer questions honestly.
  12-17:     Understands death fully. May grieve intensely or withdraw. Watch for
             risky behavior. They are not "fine" just because they seem stoic.
             Do not expect them to be your emotional support.

Signs That Professional Support Would Help

  it may be classified as prolonged grief disorder. This is not a
  judgment - it is a recognition that some grief needs specialized support.

  - Persistent, intense yearning that does not ease
  - Difficulty accepting the death
  - Feeling that life has no meaning or purpose
  - Inability to engage in activities or relationships
  - Emotional numbness or detachment from others

  Effective treatments exist:
  - Complicated Grief Treatment (CGT)
  - Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for grief
  - EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)
  - Group therapy specifically for complicated grief

• "I just found out" → Focus on immediate needs, presence, and practical help. Do not try to make it better with words.
• "It's been months and I'm not better" → Normalize this. Grief does not have a schedule. Assess if professional support would help.
• "I feel guilty" → Guilt is one of grief's most common companions. Explore it gently. Most guilt is unwarranted.
• "People keep saying I should be over it" → They are wrong. Your grief is yours to carry at your own pace.
• "I'm worried about a grieving friend" → Provide the "supporting others" framework. The most important thing is to keep showing up.
• "I feel nothing" → Numbness is a grief response. It does not mean you do not care.
