How Bees Make Honey

For beginners: Langstroth hive. Best educational resources, most mentors use it, standardized equipment, easiest to learn proper management.

Why start with two hives: You can compare colonies (is that behavior normal?), transfer resources between them, and if one queen fails, you have eggs from the other colony to raise a new queen.

- Installed into prepared hive
- Queen releases from cage over 3-5 days (colony acclimates to her pheromones)
- Available spring (March-May depending on region)
- Order by January/February (they sell out)
Nucleus Colony ("Nuc") ($175-300)
- 5 frames with established brood, honey, pollen, and a laying queen
- Stronger start than a package
- Already functioning as a colony
- Transfers directly into your hive
- Generally recommended over packages for beginners
Catching a Swarm (Free)
- Swarm lists through local beekeeping associations

- Free bees, but genetics and health unknown

Seasonal Management
Spring (March-May)

Inspection Procedure
- Light smoker (use natural fuel: pine needles, burlap, cotton)
- Approach hive from the side or rear (not blocking the entrance)

What NOT to Do During Inspections

Honey Harvest
When to Harvest
- Frames are at least 80% capped (wax cap over each cell)
- Only harvest surplus - leave enough for the bees (60-90 lbs minimum for winter)
- First-year colonies typically produce little to no surplus
- Most harvests happen late summer to early fall
Harvest Process (Langstroth)
- Remove honey supers from hive (bee escape boards, fume boards, or brush bees off)
- Bring frames to extraction area (clean, screened from bees)
