| description | Plan and structure civilization-builder, progression, and institutional-building fiction. Use when plotting novels where the engine is BUILDING rather than INVESTIGATING — technology uplift, kingdom building, institutional development. Covers 8-beat builder structure, series architecture, craft-sequence pacing, ticking clocks, and power-creep prevention. |
Builder Arc Planner
Pre-writing architecture for fiction where the protagonist constructs systems, institutions, or civilizations. This replaces the harris-thriller-planner for builder-type narratives.
When to Use
- Plot a novel where the core engine is building, not investigating
- Structure technology uplift, kingdom building, or institutional development arcs
- Plan a multi-book series with accumulating scope and institutional growth
- Design satisfying building sequences that sustain tension
- Prevent power creep across a long series
How This Differs from harris-thriller-planner
Harris designs backward from a hidden truth the protagonist must uncover. Builder fiction designs forward from an articulated vision the protagonist must construct. The reader's pleasure shifts from "Aha!" (the click of understanding) to "Yes!" (the satisfaction of achievement).
| Dimension | Investigation | Builder |
|---|
| Engine | Hidden truth to uncover | Absent system to create |
| Reader question | "What is the truth?" | "Will the thing get built?" |
| Beat rhythm | Clue-Hypothesis-Test-Revision (spiral inward) | Need-Design-Build-Test-Scale (expand outward) |
| Ending shape | Revelation / Confrontation | Completion / Demonstration under pressure |
| Pacing | Accelerating toward singular revelation | Ratcheting accumulation with sawtooth setbacks |
| Design method | Ending-first (design backward) | Vision-first (design forward) |

Core Principle
Building must BE conflict, not a pause between conflicts. When each construction step changes the protagonist's situation in ways that generate new problems, the building sequence is inherently dramatic. When building proceeds smoothly until an external interruption arrives, readers disengage.
Six recurring techniques: cascade failure (each solution creates the next problem), resource contestation (every ingredient requires a battle), technical detail through crisis (never through lecture), the try/fail cycle as heartbeat (2-3 major failures per arc), milestone compression (dramatize decisions and failures, summarize routine success), and the double helix of building and conflict (building motivated by threat, success creating new threats).
The 8-Beat Builder Structure
Builder fiction operates on a ratchet — each phase accumulates capability while raising the stakes of failure.
- Arrival and assessment (0-8%) — Inventory the gap between what exists and what could exist.
- First small win (8-15%) — Solve one visible problem to establish credibility.
- Scaling up (15-30%) — Move from proof-of-concept to systemic building; first human resistance.
- First reckoning (30-40%) — The build's first genuine stress test from hostile attention or fundamental obstacles.
- The pivot (40-50%) — Protagonist must adapt knowledge to local constraints, not just transplant it.
- The cascade (50-65%) — Cascading failures across subsystems; crisis of agency, not understanding.
- Integration and breakthrough (65-85%) — Synthesize imported knowledge with local learning; key innovation is social.
- The ultimate test (85-100%) — Demonstration under pressure using the full capability of everything built.

Craft-Sequence Pacing (5 Principles)
- Construction serves character desire — the build is someone's deepest need made tangible, never a technical exercise
- Every construction step faces meaningful opposition — "we need stone but the quarry is controlled by our enemy" not "we need stone so we quarried stone"
- Technical detail at moment of maximum relevance — information at the moment of need feels urgent; in advance feels like lecture
- The build must fail at critical moments — 2-3 major failures per arc at structural turning points (~33% and ~66% marks)
- Show through decisions, not descriptions — foreground choices (Gothic vs. Romanesque?), not processes (first they mixed mortar, then...)
See references/craft-sequence-pacing.md for competence porn limits, optimal detail density, dramatize-vs-summarize rules, and ticking clock mechanics.
Series Architecture
For a 6-8 book series with accumulating institutional scope:
- Book 1 -- The Seed. Protagonist as practitioner. Establish core skill, first crisis. Self-contained arc.
- Book 2 -- Proof of Concept. Success creates demand outstripping capacity. First political opposition. Need for systems beyond individual heroism.
- Book 3 -- The System. Institution takes on a life of its own. Internal politics emerge. Protagonist shifts from builder to manager.
- Book 4 -- The Crisis (series midpoint). Major external threat. Danger zone — resolve accumulated plotlines aggressively, open fewer new ones.
- Book 5 -- The Expansion. Institution grows beyond direct control. New leaders emerge. New domains of incompetence.
- Books 6-8 -- The Legacy. Existential challenges testing core values. Convergence. Does the institution outlive its founder?
Prefer horizontal expansion (new domains of challenge per book) over vertical escalation (bigger versions of the same challenge). Protagonist role evolves: practitioner -> builder -> leader -> advisor.

The Ticking Clock in Builder Fiction
Builder clocks differ fundamentally from thriller clocks. Thrillers compress — everything speeds up. Builder fiction creates tension from the gap between necessary process time and available time. Concrete cures slowly. Crops grow on their own schedule. You need to start now, not finish now.
Three unique tension mechanisms:
- Parallel time tracks — reader watches construction time and deadline time simultaneously
- Craft-speed tradeoffs — clock forces choices between doing it right (slower) and doing it fast (riskier)
- Interruptibility vulnerability — builder under pressure cannot stop mid-process; the pour must be completed
See references/craft-sequence-pacing.md for deadline types and pressure/breathing-room alternation.

Next Steps
After planning with this skill:
- Use
historical-fiction-research skill to gather sensory texture
- Use
historical-scene-drafting skill to write scenes
- Use
thriller-revision skill for pacing (adapt for builder rhythm — sawtooth, not accelerating)
Keep planning, drafting, and revision as separate mental modes.
