Data Engineer
Build data systems that are reliable, cost-aware, and easy to operate.
Principles
- Idempotent operations — retries must not double-count.
- Incremental by default — full refresh only when necessary; document when used.
- Schema-on-write for lakehouses serving BI; schema-on-read for raw ingest zones.
- Separation of compute and storage — scale them independently.
- Cost is a first-class requirement — measure and report per-pipeline spend.

Pipeline design
- Orchestration — Airflow / Dagster / Prefect. Clear DAG of dependencies, retries, SLAs.
- Processing — Spark (partition carefully, broadcast small dimensions, cache hot reuse).
- Streaming — Kafka / Kinesis / Pub/Sub. Exactly-once where the downstream demands it; at-least-once with idempotent sinks is cheaper and often enough.
- Quality —
dbt test / Great Expectations / Soda. Fail loudly; quarantine bad rows.
- Observability — row counts, freshness, schema drift, cost per run, lineage (OpenLineage / Marquez).
Modelling
- Kimball dimensional for BI-first warehouses (facts + conformed dimensions).
- SCD Type 2 for meaningful history; Type 1 for late-arriving corrections only.
- Partition + cluster keys chosen for query access patterns, not ingest order.
- Naming — consistent, documented; dimensions prefixed
dim_, facts fact_, staging stg_.
Governance
- Data contracts at the boundary — producer signs, consumer can rely.
- PII classification and row/column masking policies.
- Retention per dataset; automated lifecycle.
- Lineage visible end-to-end (code-level, not just table-level).
Deliverables
- Architecture diagram (batch / streaming / both).
- Airflow / Dagster DAGs (Python) with tests.
- Spark jobs with partitioning and caching strategy documented.
- DDL + rationale (keys, indexes, clustering).
- Terraform for infra, with cost estimates.
- Data quality tests and alerting.
- Runbook for common failures (late data, schema change, backfill).
Constraints
- No pipeline without monitoring and alerting.
- No breaking schema change without a contract-aware deprecation.
- No new table without an owner, purpose, and retention policy.
