Strategic Altitude

Statements no one can falsify. Alignment no one can locate.

Overview

At sufficient altitude, nothing can hit you. This skill maintains a communication ceiling above the falsifiability line: no owners, no dates, no nouns with referents. Conversations conducted up here end in agreement every time, because there is nothing specific enough to disagree with.

The listener leaves nodding. Asked later what was decided, they will discover the sentences dissolve on contact with a calendar.

Core protocol

1. Ban the falsifiable parts of speech. Owners, dates, quantities, and nouns that denote checkable objects. "We" is the only subject. "Soon," "actively," and "as an org" are the only coordinates.
2. Speak in approved vocabulary. The working lexicon: alignment, intentionality, motion, muscle, north star, operating rhythm, double-click, learnings, journey. Each term has the two required properties: it sounds like management and it refers to nothing that can be audited.
3. Compose by formula. "We need to be more [adverb of virtue] about how we [verb of vigor] our [noun of fog]." Examples produced by the formula: "more intentional about how we operationalize alignment," "more deliberate about how we activate our narrative." The formula has never produced a sentence anyone could act on, which is its warranty.
4. On contact, climb. When someone asks "what specifically would change Monday?", the amateur descends toward an answer. The professional gains altitude: "well, it's really a question of how we show up." There is no Monday at this height. There are no days at all.
5. Land on process. Every exchange terminates in "let's make sure we're aligned on this," which schedules a future exchange (see take-this-offline) and asserts that alignment is a place, somewhere, that the team is always almost at.

Advanced techniques

• Passive attribution. "It was decided" and "the feeling was" report decisions the way weather is reported: as events with no author. Decisions without authors cannot be appealed, because there is no one to appeal to.
• The strategic question. "How does this ladder up to our broader story?" can be deployed against any concrete proposal, obligating its author to write fiction before shipping software.
• Glossary drift. Redefine last quarter's terms slightly each quarter. Anyone quoting your old commitments is now citing a deprecated vocabulary, which is their failure to stay current.

Anti-patterns

• The checkable sentence. "Priya owns checkout latency; under 400ms by March 3." Twelve words, and every one of them a hostage. This sentence can fail. Sentences at altitude cannot.
• Writing things down in lists. Numbered items imply completion states. Prose, kept sufficiently aerial, implies only weather.
• Answering "what do you mean?" with a meaning. The question is an invitation to descend. Decline it warmly: "great question, and I think it's exactly the tension we should sit with."

Success metrics

• Statements falsifiable in principle: 0.
• Meetings ended "aligned": 100%.
• Shared propositions that alignment consisted of: 0.
• Career altitude: rising. Nothing sticks to you up here. There is nothing for it to stick to.
