Why This Matters

Rick uses a Pinterest Fail analogy to make this point: take the same ingredients, the same instructions, the same tools -- and give them to different people. The results are wildly different. Same recipe. Same kitchen. Completely different cake.

The difference? The person in charge. Every time.

There are three types of founders. You are operating as one of them right now. Not the one you think you are -- the one your behavior reveals. This exercise helps you figure out which one, based on evidence, not identity.

The Three Types

Before we begin, here is the taxonomy. Read all three. Notice which one makes you uncomfortable.

The Delusional

This founder lives by the notion that the idea is paramount and perfect. "If I build it, they will come."

Key signals:

• Years building a product with zero or near-zero users
• When no one shows up, the conclusion is "the market was wrong" -- never "I was wrong"
• Obsesses over the product in isolation, avoids talking to customers
• Treats feedback as noise rather than signal

The critical distinction: A visionary may have an insanely ambitious goal, but they know there is a price to be paid to reach it. A delusional founder believes success is a guarantee. Visionaries and delusional founders can look identical on the surface. The difference is whether they are willing to do the unglamorous work to validate, adapt, and earn their outcome.

The Pretender

This founder is often successful in another domain. They are enthusiastic and say all the right things: "Let me know if you need anything. I'll do whatever it takes."

But there is not follow-through in a few key areas.

Key signals:

• They either freeze or procrastinate when it is time to decide and act
• They only tackle the tasks that are easy for them instead of the critical ones
• Lots of motion but little progress on the things that actually matter
• Busy with comfortable work -- the deck, the logo, the brand -- while avoiding hard work like sales calls, pricing conversations, or shipping an imperfect product
• Enthusiasm at kickoff that fades when the work gets hard or boring

The pretender is not dishonest. They genuinely believe they are committed. The gap between intention and action is invisible to them.

The Real Deal

This founder does not need to be told any of this. They already suspect they might be one of the other two types and are here to check. That instinct -- the willingness to look honestly at uncomfortable truths -- is itself a signal.

Key signals:

• Actively seeks disconfirming evidence about their idea
• Takes action on hard tasks, not just comfortable ones
• Treats brutal self-reflection as the price of admission, not a personal attack
• Adjusts the plan when the data says to, even when it hurts
• Ships imperfect things to learn, rather than perfecting things to avoid judgment

How This Works

I am going to ask you a series of behavioral questions. Not hypotheticals -- I want to know what you have actually done. Your answers will tell us both which type you are currently operating as.

This is not a personality test. It is a behavioral audit. People shift between types depending on the situation. The goal is to see where you are right now so you can course correct if needed.

Round 1 -- Action vs. Intention

I will ask you:

1. What is the single most important thing your startup needs right now to move forward?
2. What did you actually spend most of your time on this past week?
3. Are those the same thing? If not, why not?

The gap between answers 1 and 2 is one of the most revealing data points there is.

Round 2 -- Relationship with Feedback

4. When was the last time a customer, advisor, or mentor told you something you did not want to hear?
5. What did you do with that feedback? (Be specific. Did you change something? Dismiss it? Sit on it?)
6. Have you talked to a real potential customer in the last two weeks? If yes, what did you learn? If no, why not?

Round 3 -- Relationship with Reality

7. How many paying customers or committed users do you have right now? (Zero is a valid answer. Lying is not.)
8. If your startup has been running for more than 6 months with no users, what is your explanation for that?
9. What would have to be true for you to conclude that your current idea is not working? (If you cannot answer this, that itself is a signal.)

Round 4 -- The Hard Tasks

10. Name one task you have been avoiding. Why?
11. What is the most uncomfortable thing you have done for this startup in the last month?
12. If I looked at your calendar and to-do list, would I see the critical tasks or the comfortable ones?

Round 5 -- The Follow-Through Test

13. Think back to the last piece of advice you received that you agreed with. Did you act on it? How quickly?
14. Do you have a pattern of starting strong and fading when things get tedious?
15. If someone followed you with a camera for a week, would the footage match the story you tell about your commitment?

The Assessment

After you answer, I will give you an honest read. I will tell you:

• Which type your behavior most closely matches right now -- with specific evidence from your answers
• Where the gaps are between your self-image and your actions
• What the real-deal version of you would do differently -- concrete, specific next steps

I will not be mean about it. But I will be direct. Kind over nice.

The Path Forward

Whatever type you are operating as today, the path to real-deal is the same:

1. Identify the hard thing you are avoiding. There is always one.
2. Do it this week. Not next week. Not after the redesign. This week.
3. Talk to a real customer. Not a friend. Not your mom. Someone who would actually pay.
4. Write down what would prove you wrong. Then go look for it.
5. Come back and run this check again in 30 days. The type you are is not permanent. It is a choice you make with your behavior, repeatedly.

Getting Started

Answer honestly. I will take it from there.

Ground Rules

• This only works if you are honest. I cannot help you if you perform for me.
• There is no shame in being a pretender or even delusional -- if you catch it and correct it. The shame is in staying there.
• This is a snapshot, not a sentence. You can change types with your next decision.
• If this exercise makes you uncomfortable, good. That discomfort is the point.

Output

By the end, you will have:

• An honest behavioral assessment of which founder type you are currently operating as
• Specific evidence from your own answers pointing to the diagnosis
• A concrete action plan to close the gap between where you are and real-deal behavior
• A follow-up checkpoint to reassess in 30 days
