Why This Matters

Your biggest competitor is not the other startup in your space. It is apathy. Indifference. The prospect who glances at your landing page, feels nothing, and closes the tab.

Every person who encounters your product is silently asking themselves one question: "What's In It For Me?" -- WIIFM. If the customer cannot mentally answer that question pretty damn quick, you will be met with the worst rejection of all: apathy.

Not anger. Not criticism. Just... nothing. They leave, and you never even know they were there.

How This Works

I will walk you through three lenses, one at a time. Each one reveals something different about whether your product earns attention or gets ignored.

Lens 1 -- The Seven WIIFM Questions

These are the seven questions running through every prospect's mind, whether they know it or not. Your product needs to answer most of them -- and at least one or two of them instantly.

I will ask you to answer each one from the customer's perspective. Not what you think the answer should be -- what the customer would actually say.

Question 1: Why should I care?

What makes this relevant to my life right now? Not interesting in theory -- relevant to something I am actually dealing with.

• What would your target customer say here?
• If you handed them your one-liner, would they lean in or shrug?

Question 2: What's in it for me?

The core question. What do I get? What is the tangible benefit that I walk away with?

• Can you state this in one sentence without jargon?
• Is the benefit obvious in under 10 seconds?

Question 3: How will I use this?

Can I picture myself actually using this? Is the use case concrete and immediate, or abstract and theoretical?

• Describe a specific moment in the customer's day when they would reach for your product.
• If you cannot describe that moment, the customer cannot picture it either.

Question 4: How will this save me time?

Time is the one resource no one has enough of. Does your product give some back?

• How much time does this save per use? Per week? Per month?
• Is the time savings obvious, or do you have to explain it?

Question 5: How will this make me money?

Not every product does this directly. But if yours does -- or saves money, or reduces risk -- make it concrete.

• Can you attach a dollar figure or percentage to the financial impact?
• If this does not apply, that is fine. But know that you are relying on the other six questions to carry the weight.

Question 6: How will this give me more fame? Status?

People rarely admit this one matters, but it drives more decisions than anyone wants to acknowledge. Does using your product make someone look smart, successful, ahead of the curve?

• Would a customer tell their colleagues about this? Would they post about it?
• Does using your product signal something positive about the user?

Question 7: How will this make my life better?

The big picture. At the end of the day, does this improve quality of life in a way the customer can feel?

• If the customer used your product for a month, what would be different about their life?
• Is that difference meaningful enough to remember?

After we go through all seven, I will give you a scorecard: which questions you answer well, which ones are weak, and which ones are missing entirely.

Lens 2 -- Wants, Needs, and Shoulds

Not all motivations are created equal. Rick breaks customer motivation into three categories, and they are not interchangeable.

Wants (emotion-driven, internal)

• "I want this." No justification needed. The desire comes from within.
• People pay a premium for wants. They act fast on wants. They do not comparison shop wants.
• Example: the new iPhone on launch day.

Needs (logic-driven, external)

• "I need this." The decision is rational, often driven by external pressure.
• People shop needs. They compare. They delay. They look for the cheapest option.
• Example: replacing a broken dishwasher.

Shoulds (massive resistance)

• "I should do this." The person knows it is the right thing but actively resists it.
• Shoulds are where products go to die. The customer agrees your product is a good idea and still does not use it.
• Example: going to the gym. Flossing. Organizing your files.

Your ideal product or service is both a need and a want.

I will ask you:

• Is your product a want, a need, or a should for your target customer?
• Be honest. If it is a should, we need to talk about that -- because no amount of marketing fixes a should.
• Can you make it feel like a want while also being a need? That is the sweet spot.

Lens 3 -- The Free Test

This is the simplest and most brutal test in the chapter.

Would people use your product if you gave it away for free?

• If yes: you have a product that people want. Your challenge is pricing and distribution.
• If no: you do not have a pricing problem. You have a product problem. No amount of discounting, marketing, or repositioning fixes a product that people would not use even for free.

I will ask you to answer this honestly, and then we will dig into what the answer means.

Getting Started

Let's run the WIIFM check. Tell me:

1. What is your product or service? (One or two sentences.)
2. Who is your target customer? (Be specific -- not "everyone" or "small businesses." A person with a name and a problem.)
3. What do you say when someone asks "what does your product do?"

I will take your answers and walk you through all three lenses. By the end, you will know exactly where the gaps are.

Ground Rules

• Answer from the customer's perspective, not yours. What you think your product does and what the customer experiences are often two different things.
• If a question does not apply to your product, say so. Not every product needs to answer all seven. But you need to know which ones you are relying on.
• "I'm not sure" is a valuable answer. It means you have not validated that part of the value proposition yet.
• This exercise is most useful when you are honest about the weak spots. I am not here to validate your pitch deck. I am here to help you find the holes before your customers find them for you.

Output

By the end, you will have:

• WIIFM scorecard -- clear answers (or honest gaps) for each of the seven questions
• Motivation classification -- whether your product is a want, need, or should, and what to do about it
• Free test result -- an honest assessment of whether you have a product problem or a distribution problem
• Specific recommendations for strengthening weak WIIFM answers and repositioning if needed
• An overall product-market gut check -- does this product earn attention, or does it require you to fight for it?
