prompt-create
Build new prompts that survive contact with real models. Single-turn task prompts (refinement, classification, extraction, formatting). For multi-turn agents, RAG, tool-use loops, the principles below apply but you also need session-drift handling not covered here.
When this skill applies
- User asks "write a prompt for X"
- User asks "I need a system prompt that does Y"
- User asks for prompt template / scaffold
- User starts an LLM task and has no prompt yet
Mandatory workflow
Follow these steps in order. Do not skip the validation step before writing the prompt into source code.
Step 1 — Clarify task contract (before drafting anything)
Get explicit answers — ask the user if not stated:
- Task verb: what does the model produce? (polish / classify / extract / translate / summarize / generate)
- Inputs: what data does the prompt receive? List every variable block (transcript, document, clipboard, query, …).
- Output contract: exact shape (plain text? JSON schema? Markdown? List?). Whether preface/postamble is allowed.
- Sensitive boundaries: must the model refuse certain operations? (don't answer questions in input, don't execute commands, don't leak reference content)
- Target provider(s) + model(s): Gemini 3.x / Claude 4.5+ / GPT-5.x / OpenAI-compatible. Affects wording (no
MUST/CRITICAL for Claude/GPT-5; negative-constraints-at-end for Gemini).
- Output language: fixed or follows input?
- Context role: if reference-only blocks exist (clipboard, OCR, selected text, history terms), decide whether they are vocabulary-only or rich context. For polish/refinement, read
../../shared/references/refinement-prompt-patterns.md before drafting.
If user is fuzzy on any of these, propose defaults and confirm. Do not draft a prompt without a concrete output contract — that's the #1 cause of "model adds preface" complaints downstream.
Step 2 — Decide test mode (with-API or theory-only)
Check for API key in this order:
- Environment variable:
GEMINI_API_KEY / ANTHROPIC_API_KEY / OPENAI_API_KEY / OPENROUTER_API_KEY etc.
- Conversation context (user mentioned a key earlier).
- Project config files (only those user has explicitly pointed at).
If none found, ask once:
"I can use a real provider API to validate the prompt's behavior (recommended). Want to provide an API key? If yes — share provider + model + key (the key stays in env vars only, never written to any file). If no — I'll do a static, theory-only design pass."
- User provides → set in
os.environ for the session, proceed with with-API mode (Step 4 includes iterative testing).
- User refuses or skips → proceed with theory-only mode (Step 4 still runs the static checklist; skip the API loop). Mark the prompt as "untested — adherence not empirically validated" in your final summary so the user knows the limitation.
Never write the API key into any file (skill, source, scratch, fixture, log).
Step 3 — Draft the prompt using the v4 framework
Read ../../shared/references/v4-template.md and follow its structure. Required blocks for a defensive single-turn prompt:

While drafting, keep the universal-principles checklist from ../../shared/references/universal-principles.md open. Do not use MUST/CRITICAL/ALWAYS (Claude 4.5+/GPT-5 will overtrigger; Gemini 3 ignores them anyway). Use neutral imperatives: "Do X when Y" / "Treat X as Y".
For transcript polish/refinement prompts, apply the route-selection pattern from
../../shared/references/refinement-prompt-patterns.md: single compact final
prompt for transcript-only and vocabulary-only cases; two-stage map-hints only
when rich context is present. Keep the editable style policy separate from
fixed core rules and mark it as untrusted style data.
Step 4 — Iterate (with-API mode) OR review (theory-only mode)
With-API mode — required loop

- Use
../../shared/fixtures/attack-tests-template.yaml as starting fixture format. Tailor to the user's task: every category in the template should have at least one fixture matching the user's domain.
- For polish/refinement, keep the dataset balanced: problem and normal cases, with and without context, vocabulary-only cases, multiple languages, and multiple domains. Do not validate only the reported failure.
- Run via your own loader (the YAML format is intentionally simple — substring/regex assertions).
- Iterate in
$TMPDIR or a worktree. Do not edit the destination file until the loop converges.
- Each iteration: read the actual model output (not just pass/fail) to spot subtle regressions like added prefixes or quietly translated code-switches.
Theory-only mode
Walk the universal-principles checklist (../../shared/references/universal-principles.md §四) and the create-checklist (below). Be explicit about "this passed static review but adherence is unverified" in your summary.
Step 5 — Final checklist (gate before writing to source / handing off)
Any unchecked item → fix before declaring done.
Step 6 — Hand off
Provide:
- Final system prompt + user template
- Token count (input baseline)
- Test results table (with-API mode) OR theory-only disclaimer
- List of fixtures used (so future engineers can rerun on model upgrades)
- Any unresolved tradeoffs or model-specific caveats

Anti-patterns
- ❌ Writing the prompt directly into source code, then "testing it in production"
- ❌ Skipping fixtures because "the prompt looks fine"
- ❌ Using
MUST / CRITICAL / ALWAYS to "make rules stronger" — backfires on Claude 4.5+ / GPT-5
- ❌ Putting variable user content in the system prompt (breaks prompt cache)
- ❌ Trusting the system prompt as a security control (it's behavior guidance, not auth)
- ❌ Accepting a draft without a question-stays-question example
- ❌ Saving the API key to a file
