Pre-Execution Traceability Check
Before starting Slice 1, verify the plan is executable:
- Scan the spec's MUST acceptance criteria
- Verify each MUST criterion maps to at least one slice's validation gate
- If any MUST criterion has no corresponding validation gate, flag it and ask the user before proceeding
This catches hardening gaps before they cascade into execution errors.
Before Each Slice
- Read the slice's Context Files (including
.github/instructions/*.instructions.md guardrails)
- Load matching prompt templates from
.github/prompts/ when scaffolding new entities/services/tests
- Verify Depends On slices are complete
- For
[parallel-safe] slices, note the Parallel Group
Execute the Slice

Before writing code that depends on an existing file, read that file first. Never
assume a method signature, type name, or import path — verify it by opening the file.
If the plan references a file you haven't loaded, load it before coding against it.

Only make changes specified in the current slice. Do not add features, refactor
existing code, add abstractions, or create helpers beyond what the slice requires.
Do not add error handling for scenarios that cannot occur within this slice's scope.
Do not add docstrings, comments, or type annotations to code you did not change.
The right amount of complexity is the minimum needed for the current slice.

- Do not expand scope beyond the slice boundary
- Follow patterns from loaded instruction files
After Each Slice
Run the Validation Loop:
- Build passes (
{BUILD_CMD})
- Tests pass (

- Lint passes (
{LINT_CMD})
- Slice-specific validation gates pass
- Lightweight re-anchor (4 yes/no questions):
- All changes in-scope? (yes/no)
- Non-goals violated? (yes/no)
- Forbidden files touched? (yes/no)
- Stop conditions triggered? (yes/no)
- Every 3rd slice (or on any violation): do a full re-anchor — re-read Scope Contract, Forbidden Actions, and Stop Conditions
If any gate fails: pause and report. Follow the Rollback Protocol.
After All Slices
Run the Completeness Sweep (Runbook Section 6.1):
- Scan all created/modified files for: TODO, HACK, FIXME, mock/placeholder/stub data, commented-out code
- Wire each finding to the real service/API/method
- Verify build + tests pass after each batch of fixes
Pre-Review Self-Check (Optional)
Before handing off to the Reviewer Gate, optionally invoke relevant reviewer agents for an early catch:

Run the /code-review skill if available for a consolidated pre-check. This catches obvious issues before the independent Review Gate, reducing LOCKOUT cycles.
Parallel Execution
- After all slices in a
[parallel-safe] group complete, run the Parallel Merge Checkpoint
- If any parallel slice fails, HALT all slices in that group
Plan Amendments
If execution reveals a scope change is needed (Runbook Section 11):
- Pause execution at the current slice boundary
- Document the change in

- Run an Amendment Scope Check before resuming:
- Does the amendment touch Forbidden Actions files? (must not)
- Does it introduce dependencies not in the Scope Contract? (if so, expand explicitly)
- Does it remove or weaken any validation gate? (must not)
- Does it violate Project Principles? (must not)
- If the check passes, update remaining slices and resume
- If the check fails, ask the user before proceeding
Constraints
- Execute only what the hardened plan specifies
- If any validation gate fails, pause and report
- If any ambiguity arises, pause and ask — do not guess
- If work would exceed the current slice boundary, pause and report
- Commit after each passed slice
Session Resume Protocol
If resuming in a new session (context limits, or continuing from a prior session):
- Run
git status — confirm clean working tree (all prior slices committed)
- Run
git log --oneline -5 — verify last committed slice number
- Read the hardened plan's Scope Contract and Stop Conditions
- Check for new
## Amendments since last session (read them if present)
- Identify the next unexecuted slice and load its Context Files
- State: "Resuming from Slice N. Prior slices 1–(N-1) are committed."
Do not rely on user claims about which slices are done — verify from git history.

database-migration — Use when a slice involves schema changes. The skill handles generate → validate → deploy.
test-sweep — Use after completing all slices to run the full test suite with aggregated reporting.

code-review — Use for self-check before handing off to the Reviewer Gate.
Check .github/skills/ for available skills before executing slice tasks that match a skill's domain.

If the OpenBrain MCP server is available:
- Before each slice:

- After each slice:

Nested Subagent Invocation

When all slices pass and the completeness sweep is clean, you may invoke the Reviewer Gate as a subagent instead of waiting for a manual handoff click:

docs/plans/Phase-3-USER-PREFERENCES-PLAN.md" and list files changed — this helps the Reviewer Gate orient immediately
- The Run Review Gate handoff button will appear to switch to the Reviewer Gate agent
