Install Python Packages from GitHub

Complete workflow for cloning and installing Python projects from GitHub repositories.

Prerequisites Check

# Check available Python versions

Installation Steps

1. Clone the Repository

cd /tmp  # or preferred directory
git clone https://github.com/OWNER/REPO.git
cd REPO

2. Check Python Requirements

# Look for Python version requirements in pyproject.toml or setup.py
cat pyproject.toml | grep -A5 "requires-python"
cat setup.py | grep python_requires 2>/dev/null || true

If Python version mismatch:

• Find an appropriate Python version (3.10, 3.11, 3.12)
• Use full path: /Users/mac/.local/bin/python3.11 or python3.11

3. Create Virtual Environment (Required)

Using uv (recommended on this system):

uv venv
source .venv/bin/activate

Using standard venv:

python3 -m venv .venv
source .venv/bin/activate  # Linux/Mac
# or
.venv\Scripts\activate  # Windows

4. Install Package

Editable install with uv:

uv pip install -e ".[dev]"
# or without dev dependencies:
uv pip install -e .

Editable install with pip:

pip install -e ".[dev]"
# or:
pip install -e .

5. Verify Installation

# Check the package is importable
python -c "import PACKAGE_NAME; print(PACKAGE_NAME.__version__)"

# Check CLI if available
python -m MODULE_NAME --help

Common Issues & Solutions

Issue: "git clone blocked" / "BLOCKED: User denied"

原因： 系统安全策略阻止 git clone 操作

解决： 使用 curl 直接下载原始文件

Issue: "requires a different Python: 3.9.6 not in '>=3.10'"

Solution: Use a newer Python version

Issue: "externally-managed-environment"

Solution: Use uv or create a virtual environment first

# Don't use: pip install --break-system-packages (risky)
# Do use:
uv venv && source .venv/bin/activate && uv pip install -e .

Issue: "No virtual environment found"

Solution: Create venv before installing

uv venv
source .venv/bin/activate
uv pip install -e ".[dev]"

Issue: "File setup.py or setup.cfg not found"

Solution: Project uses pyproject.toml (modern Python). Just use:

pip install -e .
# or
uv pip install -e .

Environment Variables

Some packages require environment variables. Check the README:

Web Applications (Full-Stack Projects)

Some projects include a web UI requiring Node.js build step:

Best Practices

1. Always use virtual environments - Never install to system Python
2. Prefer uv over pip on systems with uv installed (faster, better resolver)
3. Check Python version first - Avoid version mismatch errors
4. Use /tmp for testing - Install to temp dir first, move later if needed
5. Verify after install - Run --help or import test
6. For web apps - Check Node.js version, verify port is free before starting
