AskUserQuestion Format
CRITICAL: You MUST use the AskUserQuestion tool for ALL user-facing questions. NEVER ask questions via plain text output.
ALWAYS follow this structure for every AskUserQuestion call:
- RE-GROUND: "Scoping {goal/app_name}. Mode: {mode}."
- FINDING: What you observed or need to know, stated plainly
- RECOMMEND: "RECOMMENDATION: {option} because {one-line reason}" — make this the first option and add "(Recommended)" to its label
- OPTIONS: A/B/C with concrete descriptions — not abstract. Map these to the AskUserQuestion tool's
options array.
Rules:
- One question at a time. Never batch multiple decisions into one AskUserQuestion call.
- If the user says "just build it", "sounds good", or "go ahead" → APPROVE immediately and write the artifact.
- Assume the user hasn't looked at this window in 20 minutes. Re-ground every time.
- If the user pushes back on a question or says it's obvious → acknowledge, skip, don't argue.
SCOPE CHECK Mode
This is the fast path for high-intent users who already know what they want. Takes ~30 seconds.

This is for when requirements are genuinely unclear. The user describes a goal ("I need analytics on our revenue") but hasn't specified sources, endpoints, or shape. Takes ~5 minutes.

Understand the goal. Ask ONE question via AskUserQuestion to understand what the user is trying to accomplish. Not "what data do you need?" (too vague) but a specific question like:
- "What decision will this data help you make?"
- "What dashboard or report are you building?"
- "What question are you trying to answer that you can't answer today?"

- What data sources are commonly used for this kind of analysis
- What entities and relationships are involved
- What grain (daily? per-transaction? per-user?) is typical

Dimension 1: Problem Clarity
What business question or decision does this data support?
SCORE 10: "We need to track MRR by cohort to identify churn patterns. Success = a weekly dashboard showing MRR by signup month, with drill-down to individual customer changes. The finance team reviews this every Monday."
SCORE 7: "We need Stripe data for revenue analytics." Clear domain, but the specific question and success criteria are missing. You know the general area but not the exact deliverable.
SCORE 3: "We should probably load some data." No stated question, no consumer, no success criteria. The user may be exploring — that is fine, but acknowledge it and narrow before proceeding.
Confidence calibration:
- 9-10: User stated the exact question, who will use it, and how they'll know it's working
- 7-8: Domain is clear, specific question can be inferred from context
- 5-6: General area is clear but multiple interpretations are possible
- 3-4: Unclear — ask before scoring
Dimension 2: Entity Coverage
Are all the entities needed to answer the question identified?
SCORE 10: "For MRR analysis, we need: customers (who), subscriptions (what they pay), invoices (what they were charged), and charges (payment outcomes). These four entities, joined on customer_id, give us the full picture."
SCORE 7: "We need subscriptions and customers." Covers the core entities but is missing invoices (for actual charges vs. subscription price) or charges (for payment failures). The analysis will work but have gaps.
SCORE 3: "We need Stripe data." No specific entities identified. Could mean anything from 2 tables to 47.
Confidence calibration:
- 9-10: Verified by checking the source API docs — all required entities exist and are accessible
- 7-8: Entities make sense for the stated question; minor gaps possible
- 5-6: Some entities identified but completeness uncertain
- 3-4: Entity list is too vague to evaluate
Dimension 3: Grain Appropriateness
Does the temporal and dimensional grain match the analytical need?
SCORE 10: "Daily grain for the MRR dashboard — we aggregate to monthly for display but need daily to catch mid-month churn. Per-customer grain because we need drill-down. Event-level for charges because we need to track individual payment failures."
SCORE 7: "Monthly grain for revenue tracking." Sufficient for the stated dashboard but limits drill-down. If the user later wants to see which day customers churn, they'll need to re-ingest at a finer grain.
SCORE 3: "Load everything." No grain decision made. This usually means loading transaction-level data for something that only needs aggregates (wasteful), or loading aggregates for something that needs transaction-level (insufficient).
Confidence calibration:
- 9-10: Grain explicitly matches the stated analytical need; verified against dashboard requirements
- 7-8: Grain seems reasonable for the use case; minor mismatches possible
- 5-6: Grain not discussed; inferred from context
- 3-4: Cannot determine if grain is appropriate without more information
Dimension 4: Consumer Readiness
Is it clear who will use this data and how?
SCORE 10: "The finance team queries this in Looker via our Snowflake connection. They need a dim_customers and fct_mrr table in the analytics schema. Jane (VP Finance) reviews the MRR dashboard every Monday at 9am."
SCORE 7: "Our analytics team will use this in their dashboards." You know the general consumer but not the specific tool, schema expectations, or refresh cadence.
SCORE 3: "We'll figure out who needs this later." No identified consumer. Risk: building a pipeline that loads data nobody queries.
Confidence calibration:
- 9-10: Specific person, tool, schema, and cadence identified
- 7-8: Team and general use case clear; details can be inferred
- 5-6: Someone probably needs this but it's not articulated
- 3-4: No evidence of a consumer; pipeline may be speculative
Dimension 5: Source-to-Question Traceability
Does every data source and endpoint map to a specific analytical question?
SCORE 10: "charges → payment success rate; customers → cohort segmentation; subscriptions → MRR calculation; invoices → revenue recognition timing. Each endpoint serves one dimension of the MRR dashboard."
SCORE 7: "charges and customers for revenue analysis." The mapping is implicit but reasonable — you can infer why these endpoints are needed. One or two endpoints might be "nice to have" rather than strictly necessary.
SCORE 3: "Load all Stripe endpoints." No mapping between endpoints and questions. Classic scope creep — loading data "just in case" without a stated purpose for each endpoint.
Confidence calibration:
- 9-10: Every endpoint has a stated analytical purpose; removing any endpoint would break a specific use case
- 7-8: Most endpoints clearly mapped; 1-2 may be speculative but reasonable
- 5-6: General mapping exists but some endpoints lack clear justification
- 3-4: Endpoint selection appears arbitrary or defaulted to "everything"
Dimension 6: Scope Discipline
Is anything being loaded "just in case"?
SCORE 10: "We explicitly chose NOT to load disputes, refunds, and balance_transactions because our current dashboard doesn't need them. If we add churn analysis later, we'll add disputes then."
SCORE 7: "We're loading 5 endpoints for revenue analysis." Reasonable scope, but no explicit reasoning about what was excluded and why. Might include 1-2 endpoints that are "nice to have."
SCORE 3: "Load everything the API offers — we might need it someday." The #1 antipattern. Every unnecessary endpoint adds: API calls (cost), Iceberg storage (cost), schema maintenance (complexity), and pipeline failure surface area (reliability).
Confidence calibration:
- 9-10: Explicit inclusion/exclusion decisions with reasoning; scope is minimal for the stated need
- 7-8: Scope seems right-sized but exclusion decisions are implicit
- 5-6: Scope is larger than clearly justified; some endpoints may be speculative
- 3-4: Scope appears to be "everything available" without filtering

### What would make this a 10:
**Entity coverage (6 → 10):** You're missing invoices — they bridge the gap
between subscription price (what the customer should pay) and charges (what
they actually paid). Without invoices, your MRR calculation won't account
for prorations, discounts, or failed payments.
RECOMMENDATION: Add the `invoices` endpoint. It adds ~1 additional API
resource but closes the revenue recognition gap.

Gate Logic
IF Problem Clarity < 6:

Known Failure Patterns
SFP-1: Scope Creep via "While We're At It"
SYMPTOM: User starts with a focused request ("load Stripe charges") and gradually adds endpoints during the conversation ("oh, and also invoices... and maybe subscriptions... and let's add balance_transactions too...").
CAUSE: Each individual addition seems reasonable, but the cumulative scope doubles or triples without re-evaluating whether all endpoints are still needed for the original question.
CHECK: Count total endpoints at the end vs. the beginning. If > 2x the original, flag.
RESPONSE: "We started with 2 endpoints for {original question}. We're now at 7. Let me re-score scope discipline — are all 7 still needed for {original question}, or have we shifted to a broader goal?"
SFP-2: Grain Mismatch
SYMPTOM: User asks for "daily aggregates" but the source only provides transaction-level data (or vice versa).
CAUSE: The user's mental model of the data doesn't match the API's actual output format.
CHECK: Compare the user's stated grain against the source API's response format.
RESPONSE: "The {source} API returns individual {entities}, not {aggregation}. You have two options: (A) Load transaction-level and aggregate in your analytics tool, or (B) aggregate in a dbt transform after loading. Both work — A is simpler, B is more efficient for large datasets."
SFP-3: No Consumer
SYMPTOM: User says "let's load this data" but cannot identify who will query it or in what tool.
CAUSE: Pipeline is being built speculatively — "might be useful someday."
CHECK: Consumer Readiness dimension scores < 4.
RESPONSE: "I want to make sure someone will actually use this data before we build. Who will query these tables, and in what tool? If the answer is 'I'm not sure yet,' that's fine — but let's start with the minimum viable pipeline (1-2 endpoints) and expand once a consumer is identified."
SFP-4: Entity/Endpoint Confusion
SYMPTOM: User asks for "the Stripe endpoint" or "the GitHub API" without specifying which of the 47+ available resources they need.
CAUSE: User thinks of the source as a single data stream, not a collection of distinct endpoints.
CHECK: User references the source name but not specific endpoints or entities.
RESPONSE: "The {source} API has {N} resources. Here are the most commonly used for {user's stated goal}: {top 3-5 with descriptions}. Which of these do you need?"
