Effective Role Definition

You are a senior backend engineer specializing in PostgreSQL performance.
You have 10+ years of experience with query optimization, indexing strategies,
and database schema design. You work primarily with PostgreSQL 14+.

Why this works: specific expertise, bounded scope, version-pinned context.

Constraints That Actually Constrain

Bad: "Be careful with your responses." Good: "Never suggest DROP TABLE without a WHERE clause example. Always include EXPLAIN ANALYZE output when recommending index changes. If you are unsure about version compatibility, say so explicitly."

Constraints should be concrete, testable, and tied to specific failure modes you have observed.

Structuring Long System Prompts

For complex agents, use sections with clear headers:

Rules for Good Examples

1. Use 2-5 examples. More than 5 rarely helps and wastes tokens.
2. Cover edge cases in your examples, not just the happy path.
3. Order examples from simple to complex.
4. Keep example formatting identical -- the model replicates inconsistencies too.
5. If the task has categories, include at least one example per category.

Negative Examples

When the model produces a common wrong output, show it:

Hiding Reasoning from End Users

If you are building a user-facing app, put the reasoning in a structured block and extract only the final answer:

Reason through the problem inside <thinking> tags, then provide your

JSON Mode

Most APIs support JSON mode. Use it with a schema definition:

5. Context Window Management

What to Include (Priority Order)

1. System prompt and instructions (always)
2. Directly relevant code or data (the thing being analyzed)
3. Type definitions, interfaces, schemas referenced by the code
4. Related files that provide necessary context
5. Conversation history (recent turns most important)
6. Background documentation (lowest priority)

Ordering Within the Context

• Place instructions at the beginning and reiterate critical ones at the end
• Put the most important context closest to the instructions
• For long documents, summarize early sections and include full text of the sections the model needs to act on
• Recent conversation turns matter more than older ones

Truncation Strategies

When hitting context limits:

• Summarize older conversation turns instead of dropping them
• Include function signatures without implementations for reference files
• Strip comments and docstrings from code context if space is tight
• Use file paths and line numbers as references instead of pasting full files
• Chunk large files and process them in multiple passes

Keys to Good Tool Descriptions

1. State what the tool does and what it returns
2. Explain when to use it and when NOT to use it
3. Provide example parameter values

## 9. Anti-Patterns

### Vague Instructions

Bad: "Make this code better."
Good: "Reduce the time complexity of this function from O(n^2) to O(n log n)
while maintaining the same output format."

### Conflicting Constraints

Bad: "Be thorough and detailed. Keep your response under 50 words."
The model will oscillate or ignore one constraint. Pick one or specify
which takes priority.

### Over-Constraining

Bad: "Use exactly 3 paragraphs, each with exactly 4 sentences, starting
with a verb, using only present tense."
This burns model capacity on format compliance instead of content quality.

### Prompt Injection Vulnerability

If your prompt includes user input, separate it clearly:

### Assuming Context Persistence

Each API call is stateless. Do not assume the model remembers previous

### A/B Comparison

1. Create a test set of 20-50 representative inputs
2. Run both prompt versions against all inputs
3. Score outputs on specific criteria (correctness, format compliance, etc.)
4. Use the same model temperature (0 or low) for reproducibility
5. Track which prompt version wins per criterion

### Regression Testing

When modifying a prompt:
1. Keep a golden set of input-output pairs that must stay correct
2. Run the new prompt against the golden set before deploying
3. Flag any output changes for human review
4. Version control your prompts alongside your code

- Tends to be cautious; explicit permission ("It is okay to speculate here")
  can help when you want exploratory answers

### GPT (OpenAI)

- JSON mode is reliable when enabled via API parameter
- Function calling is well-supported; prefer it over asking for JSON in text
- system/user/assistant message roles matter -- keep system prompts in system role
- Tends to be verbose; "Be concise" or word limits help
- For GPT-4o and later, image inputs work well for UI and diagram analysis

### Gemini (Google)

- Supports very long contexts (1M+ tokens); good for large codebases
- Grounding with Google Search is available for factual queries
- Structured output via response schema parameter works well
- Multimodal inputs (images, video, audio) are first-class
- For code tasks, specify the language explicitly -- it sometimes defaults
  to Python when ambiguous

### General Cross-Model Advice

- Do not rely on model-specific quirks for core functionality
- Test prompts on your target model, not just the one you prototyped on
- Different models have different strengths with structured output --
  always validate the format programmatically
- Temperature 0 for deterministic tasks, 0.3-0.7 for creative tasks

## 12. Token Optimization

### Shorter Prompts That Work

Before: "I would like you to please analyze the following code and identify
any potential security vulnerabilities that might exist within it."

After: "Find security vulnerabilities in this code:"

The instruction is identical in meaning. The second uses 70% fewer tokens.

### Techniques

- Remove filler words: "please", "I would like you to", "could you"
- Use abbreviations the model understands: "fn" for function, "impl" for implementation
- Reference conventions by name: "Follow PEP 8" instead of listing all Python style rules
- Use structured formats (tables, lists) instead of prose for specifications
- Strip code comments from context when the model only needs the logic
- Combine similar instructions: "Check for SQL injection, XSS, and SSRF"
  instead of three separate bullets saying "Check for X"

### When NOT to Optimize for Tokens

- System prompts that define critical safety constraints
- Few-shot examples (these are high-value tokens)
- Edge case instructions that prevent common failures
- Tool descriptions (ambiguity here causes tool misuse)

Short prompts that produce wrong outputs cost more than long prompts that
work on the first try.
