A Participatory Guarantee System is a locally organised, peer-verified certification alternative. Instead of paying a commercial inspector to verify your practice, your farm is inspected by other farmers in the same network, and the group collectively guarantees each member's compliance. Customers trust the group, not the inspector.
PGS is recognised by IFOAM (the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements) as a valid organic verification mechanism and is widely used in Latin America, India, and parts of Europe. It is growing in use in the UK and USA among small direct-market farms.
When PGS works:
PGS delivers equivalent customer trust to third-party certification in direct-market contexts:
- Farmers markets
- Box schemes and CSA
- On-farm direct sales
- Local restaurant relationships
PGS does NOT substitute for third-party certification when:
- You are selling to a retailer or buyer who requires an accredited third-party certificate
