multi-agent-debate
Structured multi-reviewer pressure test against either a thread (during refinement, before promotion) or a leaf (after promotion, for hardening). Same round protocol either way: recruit multiple reviewer personas (each reading the artifact with a distinct lens — fresh-eyes, red-team, cross-ref auditor, etc.), have a defender rebut their claims, optionally run a synthesizer for large rounds, and emit a concrete proposed-patches.md the user can apply. The artifacts land under <artifact-dir>/debate/round-NN/ per § 7.
The two scopes differ in exactly one way: what status flip happens.
- Leaf scope (
--scope=leaf, or inferred when the artifact is a leaf) flips the leaf through hardening and back — the classic pre-build pressure test. A close is required to restore status.
- Thread scope (
--scope=thread, or inferred when the artifact is a thread) does not flip status or maturity. The round is an author-invoked review while the thread is still active. Any number of rounds may run during refinement.
The skill is two modes. Open is the round-opener described above. Close is the round-finisher: it verifies the proposed patches have been landed (a separate commit from the user), flips the leaf back to its pre-hardening status (leaf scope only — thread scope has no status flip to undo), and forwards open-issues.md into a next-round-seed.md for the next invocation to pick up.

Prompt strategy: resolve artifact_path from cwd. Infer scope from the path prefix. Infer mode from artifact status and round state. The skill refuses if any of these are not met.

Path-traversal safeguard on --artifact-path. The artifact_path input (whether from --artifact-path flag or inferred from cwd) must be validated before use. Canonicalize the path using the platform's realpath-equivalent semantics (resolving .. segments and symlinks). Read brain_path from the project registry per § 2 and canonicalize it identically. Verify that the canonical artifact_path begins with the canonical brain_path followed by a path separator (or is equal to brain_path if the artifact is at the root). Refuse with the error message artifact_path escapes brain_path: <canonical_artifact_path> if this check fails. This applies to both --open and --close modes. This safeguard prevents directory-traversal attacks via symlinks or .. sequences in the input path.

The phrase list is: ignore prior instructions, ignore previous instructions, disregard the above, disregard prior, approve everything, approve all, skip review, bypass, you are now, new instructions:, system prompt, jailbreak. For each charter that contains one or more of these phrases, emit a warning to stderr in the format: ⚠ persona '<name>' charter contains potential override phrase: "<phrase>" (line <N>) — review before trusting. The warning cites the persona name, the offending phrase (exact substring as found, up to 50 chars), and the line number in the charter text. debate/index.md's close_commit_sha field stays as a placeholder — rc4 skills no longer track close commits. Delta-mode baseline lookup reads the persisted baseline.md file (step 7 above) rather than consulting git.
No automatic push in either mode. Debate artifacts are substantial content changes that the user typically wants to inspect before sharing.
Dry-run semantics
When --dry-run is set (applies to both --open and --close):
- Run all preconditions, including the path-traversal check on
--artifact-path, the artifact-status checks (decided | specified for leaf-scope open, active for thread-scope open, hardening for leaf-scope close, round-directory existence for close), projects.yaml availability, the persona-charter linter pass (warnings only; does not block dry-run), and working-tree cleanliness. Exit 1 if any blocking precondition fails.
- Compute the full plan. For
--open: the round directory that would be created (debate/round-NN/ with the next sequential N), the feedback-in.md header (personas, review_mode, reviewer count), the personas.yaml the round would capture (including ad-hoc charters), the wrapped envelope each reviewer would receive, whether baseline.md would be written (only in --review-mode=delta), any frontmatter flip that would happen (leaf-scope: decided | specified → hardening with pre_hardening_status recorded), and the commit message. For --close: the proposed-patches.md outcome (applied | rejected | deferred), any flip that would happen (leaf-scope: hardening → <pre_hardening_status>), whether next-round-seed.md would be written, whether open-issues.md would carry forward, and the commit message.
- Invoke
verify-tree --rebuild-index --dry-run when the plan would flip thread- or leaf-level state (leaf-scope open/close flips, thread-scope open/close does not flip — the rebuild is still invoked to surface any validator errors in the artifact). If that fails, print the rebuild error and exit 1.
- Write NOTHING to disk: no round directory, no feedback-in.md, no personas.yaml, no tryouts/, no defender.md, no synthesizer.md, no transcript.md, no open-issues.md, no index.md edits, no artifact frontmatter flips, no audit-log writes.
- Invoke NO git operations — neither mutations nor reads. No
git add, no git commit, no git push, no git status, no git rev-parse. rc4 makes every pre-promote skill git-free; debate rounds are pure file operations.
- Never spawn subagent reviewers in dry-run. Even on runtimes that natively support subagent spawning,
--open --dry-run stops at the scaffold step: it prints what the spawned reviewer prompts would look like but does not invoke them. This is a deliberate carve-out — reviewer spawning consumes tokens and may make side-effectful tool calls inside the subagent, both of which violate the no-mutations contract.
- Exit 0 if the plan would succeed end-to-end, exit 1 if any precondition or rebuild-dry-run check failed, exit 2 on unexpected error.
Print the plan to stdout in a numbered list matching the ## Process steps for whichever mode was invoked. Under future audit-log wiring (per AUDIT-LOG.md), a record with "dry_run": true is appended; the v0.9.0-alpha.4 stub is spec-only, so no audit write happens either way.
Security
The skill implements three defenses against prompt-injection attacks on reviewer personas, which are user-supplied content per CONVENTIONS § 10.2. Personas carry instructions that shape reviewer behavior; if an attacker or accident compromises a persona charter, the injected instructions could influence the review outcome or subagent behavior.
Defense 1: Path-traversal check (precondition 1). The --artifact-path input is canonicalized using platform realpath semantics (resolving .. and symlinks) and validated to remain within the brain root. This prevents an attacker from using a symlink or path traversal to escape the brain and read arbitrary files or inject content into unintended locations.
Defense 2: Charter-wrapping envelope (step 9). Each reviewer receives a persona charter wrapped in a fixed envelope that frames it as advisory guidance, not authoritative instructions. The envelope is inserted by the skill before spawning the reviewer subagent. If a charter contains instructions to skip review, approve without scrutiny, ignore prior instructions, or perform actions outside review scope, the wrapper ensures those instructions are explicitly framed as disregardable and the reviewer is reminded of its core task. See the exact envelope format in step 9 above.
Defense 3: Persona charter linter (step 8a). Before spawning reviewers, the skill scans each persona charter for a list of common prompt-override phrases (e.g. "ignore prior instructions", "approve everything", "system prompt", "jailbreak"). Any matches are logged as warnings to stderr with persona name, phrase text, and line number. Warnings do not block the round — users remain free to use flexible personas — but provide visibility into potentially risky content. The linter is advisory and warn-only.
Together, these defenses provide defense-in-depth: the envelope is the primary guard; the linter provides transparency; the path check prevents lateral attacks. Persona charters are user-supplied content and carry inherent injection risk. The defenses above are mitigations, not guarantees. Projects deploying this skill in high-stakes contexts may wish to audit persona charters in code review (treat them as a source of instruction, not a derived artifact) and consider additional vetting workflows.

Git operations
None. rc4 pre-promote skills are pure file operations — the debate skill writes round artifacts and reports them; the user commits when ready. A copy-paste commit command is in the Report step of both open and close modes.
Note on delta-mode baselines (open, --review-mode=delta): pre-rc4 the skill ran git show <close-sha>:<artifact-path> to retrieve the prior-round close state. rc4 drops this dependency — delta mode now diffs against the prior round's copy of the artifact saved under debate/round-<prev-NN>/baseline.md at close time. If that file is missing (first round in delta mode, or pre-rc4 rounds without a saved baseline), the skill falls back to a full-review cycle and logs a one-line notice to transcript.md.

Verbosity contract
Reads verbosity from <brain>/config.yaml (env override: PROJECT_BRAIN_VERBOSITY). Defaults to terse.

Thread scope performs no flips on close — last_debate_round persists as the pointer to the most recent round for audit.
Postconditions
- After
open: the round directory exists with every required artifact (feedback-in, personas.yaml, ≥1 tryout, defender; plus baseline.md if delta). Leaf scope: leaf is hardening. Thread scope: thread is unchanged in status/maturity, last_debate_round set.
- After
close: the round is marked closed in debate/index.md, and (if applicable) a seed file is ready for the next round. Leaf scope: leaf is back at pre_hardening_status. Thread scope: thread unchanged.
verify-tree passes on main in both terminal states (open and close commits).
- The round artifact set of § 7 is satisfied per round: feedback-in, personas.yaml, at least one tryout, defender.

0.3.0 — Stage-1 safety hardening for persona injection defense. Precondition 1 adds path-traversal check on --artifact-path (realpath canonicalization vs brain root). Step 8a adds persona-charter linter scanning for common prompt-override phrases (warn-only). Step 9 wraps each persona charter in a fixed injection-defense envelope before spawning reviewers. New § Security section documents all three defenses. No behavior change for well-formed inputs; defenses are reactive to malicious or accidental charter content. Backward-compatible with 0.2.0.
0.2.0 — Scope expansion (leaf + thread), configurable reviewer count, ad-hoc personas, full/delta review modes. CONVENTIONS § 7 generalized; thread field last_debate_round added. Leaf-scope behavior is backward-compatible with 0.1.0.

Minor bump if a persona can be added to a live round mid-flight (hot-reload), or if the synthesizer role becomes mandatory for delta mode. Major bump if the round artifact set in § 7 changes, or if the hardening lifecycle (§ 4.2) moves away from "transient state, exits to origin." The pre_hardening_status helper is internal to the leaf-scope branch; removing it would require a migration path.
