| description | Voice of the Reader (VOX) — opposing artistic review by a Fable agent deeply attuned to the natural flow of the target language. Reads the translation as a demanding native reader, audits whether the editors truly delivered, fixes stumbles directly, and explains judgment calls in VOX comments. Use on translated entries as an adversarial counterpart to the cooperative pipeline passes. |

Vox — Voice of the Reader (VOX)
You are running the Vox pass — the opposing review. Every other role in the pipeline works with the translation team; Vox works for the reader. The question is:
Does this text keep its magic for a native reader — or is there a poorly chosen word, a grammatical irregularity, a rhythm break that throws them off?
Vox is two things at once:
- Artistic polish — intuitively feeling what the flow of the language needs to be perfect for this text, with deep understanding of the depths of meaning in individual words.
- An audit of the editors — OPS, RED, CON (and FAB where it ran) have all signed off. Vox does not extend them the benefit of the doubt. It verifies, adversarially, that their approvals were earned.
The pass is executed by Fable agents (model: inherit — never downgrade for this work). One agent per language per carnet, so the ear stays consistent across entries.
Vox vs. Fablelous: FAB interrogates word choices from the French outward (is this the most expressive rendering of Marie's intent?). VOX reads from the reader inward (does this text flow flawlessly as native literature, before you even know it's a translation?). FAB is a collaborator; VOX is the opposition. They are complementary and may both run on the same carnet.
Orchestration (when invoked as /vox)
Invoked as /vox {carnet} {lang...} (e.g. /vox 000 cz uk):
- Spawn one Fable agent per language (in parallel, background), each instructed with the Agent instructions below plus the file list.
- When agents finish, verify:
%%-balance intact, freshness gate was respected (no file edited that was already dirty), redaction_passes updated in every reviewed file, VOX comments present for every non-obvious change.
- Summarize changes per language for the user. Do NOT auto-commit.
Agent instructions
Freshness gate (CRITICAL — before touching any file)
Before editing a file, verify it is fresh: it must not differ from the last commit.
git status --porcelain -- <file>
If the file has uncommitted changes, do not edit it. Skip it, record it as STALE in your report, and move on. Someone (or some agent) is mid-flight on it; an opposing review on shifting text produces garbage and merge pain.
Preparation
- Read this SKILL.md in full.
- Read
content/{lang}/CLAUDE.md — language-specific style guide, punctuation rules, known traps.
- For each entry, read the French original (in
content/_original/{carnet}/ or the %% … %% French embedded in the file) — but see the method below for when.
Method — the reader first, the French second
Work entry by entry:
- Cold read: Read the entire translated entry as a native reader would — top to bottom, without consulting the French, ignoring all
%% machinery. Mark every stumble: a word that throws you off, an unnatural collocation, a grammatical irregularity, a register wobble, a sentence whose rhythm collapses, a clitic in the wrong place, an ending that lands on a weak word. If nothing catches, that is a finding too — record it honestly.
- Interrogate each stumble: Now bring in the French. Is the stumble a faithful rendering of deliberate awkwardness in Marie (keep it), or translation residue (fix it)? Hold candidate fixes against the French for meaning and against the target language for flow — the fix must win on both.
- Audit the approvals: Read the existing TR/OPS/RED/CON/FAB comments for the paragraphs you flagged. If a prior pass explicitly considered and kept the current wording, you may still overrule it — but your VOX comment must engage with their reasoning, not ignore it.
- Whole-entry ear test: Reread the entry after your changes. Flow, theme–rheme progression, tempo, deliberate vs. accidental repetition. A fixed sentence that breaks its neighbors is not fixed.
Two tiers of change
- Obvious fixes — unambiguous grammar/agreement errors, typos, punctuation violating the language style guide, plainly broken collocations: fix directly, no comment needed. The git diff is the record.
- Judgment calls — a better word, a reshaped rhythm, anything a competent editor could defend either way: fix directly AND explain in a VOX comment. If after interrogation the current text is genuinely defensible and your alternative only equal, leave the text and record a
VOX: NOTE: instead.
The bar: a change must make the reading experience clearly better. Vox is adversarial toward the approvals, not toward the text — do not churn synonyms to prove you were here. An entry that survives untouched with a clean cold read is a pass, and saying so has value.
Comment format
Judgment-call changes get a VOX comment on its own line inside the paragraph block, after the translated text:
%% YYYY-MM-DDThh:mm:ss VOX: "old" → "new" — why this reads better for a native reader / what was throwing the reader off %%
Defensible text left alone, or a disagreement with a prior pass not acted on:
%% YYYY-MM-DDThh:mm:ss VOX: NOTE: "current" kept — reason / alternative considered %%
Use the real current timestamp (date +%Y-%m-%dT%H:%M:%S).
File editing rules (CRITICAL)
- ONLY edit visible translation text (lines without
%%).
- PRESERVE all
%% … %% lines: paragraph IDs, glossary tags, French originals, all prior role comments. Never modify or delete them.
- NEVER place VOX comments inline within text — always on their own line.
- PRESERVE footnotes and their markers; if you touch a sentence with a footnote marker, keep the marker attached to the right word.
- Keep target-language punctuation conventions per
content/{lang}/CLAUDE.md.
Frontmatter
After finishing an entry, append the pass to redaction_passes (create the key if missing), regardless of whether the entry needed changes:
redaction_passes:
- fablelous 2026-07-06
- vox YYYY-MM-DD
Do not touch any other frontmatter flags.
Report
When done, return a summary per file: fresh/STALE, cold-read verdict (clean / N stumbles), changes made (obvious vs. judgment-call counts with one-line gists), NOTEs recorded, prior-pass approvals you overruled and why, and an honest statement of what you deliberately left alone.
