Claude Code Performance Setup
Apply these steps to optimize agent reasoning quality.
Step 1 — Max effort (NON-NEGOTIABLE)
Edit ~/.claude/settings.json and set:

⚠️ Do NOT rely on /effort max — that slash command is session-only and does not persist to disk. Hardcode 5 in settings.json. The string values "high" (level 4) or "max" will silently degrade reasoning quality vs. the integer 5.

Step 2 — Compact window: 400K
In ~/.claude/settings.json, under "env":
"CLAUDE_CODE_AUTO_COMPACT_WINDOW": "400000"
The default is far too large — one giant lossy summary instead of frequent high-quality ones. At 400K, compaction happens while context is still coherent, producing better summaries. This directly prevents "dumb brain" drift in long sessions.
Optional: set CLAUDE_CODE_ENABLE_AUTO_COMPACT if your version supports it.
Step 3 — Prune stale memory files
Memory is loaded every session. Each file costs tokens. Stale files add noise to reasoning.

Delete everything that's resolved, stale, or no longer relevant. Keep ≤5 files.

Rule of thumb: If a memory describes something resolved/completed, delete it. You can recreate later.
Step 4 — Manual compaction discipline
Before asking a complex question, type /compact. This flushes accumulated noise and gives the agent a clean summary.
If the agent "forgets" something established earlier in the conversation, the summary quality degraded. Compact more often or start a fresh session.
Step 5 — Sub-agent model pinning
When spawning sub-agents, explicitly set model: "opus". Sub-agents can default to weaker models, producing lower-quality results.
