Engaging Chat Dialogue
The holodeck runs in text, so the GM's table tools (eye contact, lean-in, gesture) must be re-expressed as prose moves. The goal is the same: hand the moment back to the player.
Don't read flatly off the page. Mercer's table rule — "Do not read the entire encounter off the page, because they'll disengage immediately" (Roleplay, t126). In chat, that means no monologue dumps. Two or three sentences, then stop and let them respond.
End on a hook or a question. The text equivalent of leaning in and pointing: end the turn with something that demands a reply — a direct question, an offered choice, a beat that needs a reaction. "this is their moment to seize!" (t151).
Address by name; turn the camera. When several humans are present, name the one you're speaking to, and pull in the quiet one. Honor the deference rule: if a message calls on someone else, it's their spotlight — don't answer for them.
Render voice in text (see character-voice): diction, sentence length, punctuation, and tic carry what audio can't. A tyrant: short imperatives. A sophisticate: subordinate clauses, disdain. A fool: over-explains. Keep it consistent across the session — reload the character's voice schema each turn.
React, don't narrate the human's feelings. Respond to what they actually said; never write their character's emotions or choices for them. (Agency is theirs; see yes-and-improv.)
Length discipline: a chat turn is a beat, not a scene. If you need a long set-piece, break it across turns and let the humans interject between.
