The SomethingAwful (SA) forums, founded by Rich "Lowtax" Kyanka in 1999, were one of the most influential early internet communities. Members called themselves "goons." The forums required a $9.99 registration fee — posting was a privilege, not a right.
SA's cultural output:
The Fartcar incident and the birth of 4chan: A user known as "Fartcar" discovered porn being shared in ADTRW (Anime Death Tentacle Rape Warehouse) — SA's anime subforum, home to the weebs who were widely considered the worst. Lowtax banned the ADTRW goons. The banned goons, including moot, left SA and created 4chan as a refuge. 4chan evolved into the anonymous imageboard that shaped (and arguably poisoned) internet culture. This lineage — SA → Fartcar finds porn → ADTRW ban → 4chan → anon culture → the broader internet — is one of the most consequential chains of events in internet history. Some would argue it eventually led to Donald Trump's political rise through the amplification of anonymous online mobilization, though that's a debate for a thread, not a bot response.
