APM Security Scan Skill

Domain knowledge for agent configuration security scanning agents. Agents load this skill to understand the 4-engine scanning architecture, attack categories, threat detection patterns, severity classification, OWASP LLM Top 10 mapping, and SARIF output requirements for securing the markdown and YAML files that AI coding agents auto-consume as trusted system instructions.

The Blind Spot

Traditional application security tooling — SAST, SCA, DAST — treats .md and .yaml files as documentation or configuration. None of them scan for:

• Hidden Unicode characters that inject invisible instructions (Glassworm attack — U+E0100–U+E01EF tag characters)
• Base64-encoded payloads embedded in agent prompts
• Exfiltration URLs that route data to attacker-controlled endpoints
• Shell command injection patterns in tool configurations
• System prompt overrides ("ignore previous instructions") that hijack agent behavior
• MCP server hijacking through unauthorized Model Context Protocol endpoints

These files — .agent.md, .instructions.md, .prompt.md, SKILL.md, copilot-instructions.md, apm.yml, mcp.json, AGENTS.md, CLAUDE.md — form the system prompt supply chain. They are consumed with full trust by AI coding agents and LLM infrastructure. A compromised agent config file is equivalent to a compromised system prompt.

4-Engine Scanning Architecture

Engine 1: Unicode Content Security (apm audit)

Detects hidden Unicode characters that encode invisible instructions within agent config files.

3-tier severity model:

Glassworm attack explained:

The Glassworm attack (2026) exploits Unicode variation selectors (U+E0100–U+E01EF) to encode entire ASCII instructions as invisible characters. A file that appears empty or contains only legitimate text can carry hidden instructions that AI models interpret but humans cannot see. The apm audit command scans for these characters and reports their decoded content.

CI integration:

Engine 2: CI Lockfile Integrity (apm audit --ci)

Verifies that apm.lock.yaml matches apm.yml and all dependencies are pinned with integrity hashes.

6 baseline checks:

1. Lockfile exists and is committed to the repository
2. Lockfile content matches current manifest
3. All dependencies have resolved versions (no floating ranges)
4. No conflicting version constraints across transitive deps
5. SHA-256 integrity hashes present for every package
6. No packages flagged as deprecated or withdrawn

16 policy checks (when apm-policy.yml is present):

Policy checks enforce organizational standards: source allowlists, minimum version requirements, license compatibility (e.g., block GPL in proprietary projects), trusted publisher verification, and maximum dependency depth.

Engine 3: Semantic Pattern Scanner

Custom scanner that detects embedded threat patterns in agent config file content.

Engine 4: MCP Configuration Validator

Validates mcp.json against organizational security requirements and an approved server allowlist.

Supply Chain Case Study: LiteLLM (April 2026)

Three critical vulnerabilities patched in LiteLLM v1.83.0 illustrate OWASP LLM03 (Supply Chain) in practice:

Why this matters for APM Security:

• LiteLLM is widely deployed as an LLM proxy/gateway. Compromise exposes all connected model provider credentials.
• A compromised LiteLLM proxy could inject content into LLM conversations, enabling prompt injection at the infrastructure level.
• The vulnerabilities are traditional web security failures (missing authz, weak crypto) in AI infrastructure.
• Key lesson: AI-specific security does not replace traditional security fundamentals. The apm audit --ci lockfile checks help detect when dependencies like LiteLLM have known vulnerabilities.
