Addressing the Unfamiliar Math Method
You said you do not recognize the math method his class is using. This is common -- 4th grade math often uses area models, partial products, and decomposition strategies that look very different from standard algorithms.
Do not teach him a different method. Even if a familiar method produces the correct answer, using it will confuse him when the teacher assesses his understanding of the method they taught.

A Note on What Success Looks Like
The goal here is not a perfectly quiet 40-minute homework session every night. The goal is a consistent structure that gradually builds his ability to work independently, preserves your relationship with him around academic work, and gives his teacher accurate information about what he understands versus what he can only do with significant support.
Nights will still be hard sometimes. That is normal. The structure and the gradual release plan will reduce the frequency and intensity of the hard nights over 3-4 weeks.
