Process

Step 1: Identify the HVAC System Type and Configuration

Before any maintenance guidance can be given, establish exactly what system the user has. Many homeowners do not know the difference between a heat pump and a furnace -- ask clarifying questions if the input is vague.

How to identify a heat pump vs. furnace + AC: A heat pump has only one outdoor unit that operates for both heating and cooling. If the outdoor unit runs in the winter, it is a heat pump. A gas furnace + AC combination will have a flue pipe exiting through the roof or wall; the outdoor unit runs only during cooling season.
Determine age: Ask the user to find the data plate on the indoor unit (usually inside the furnace cabinet door or on the air handler). The manufacture date is often encoded in the serial number -- most manufacturers use the first four digits as year and week (e.g., "1815" = 15th week of 2018). Step 3: Build the Customized Filter Schedule

Filter maintenance is the single highest-impact DIY maintenance task. Build a specific schedule based on the collected context.

1-inch disposable filters: Base interval is every 90 days. Adjust: subtract 30 days for each pet, subtract 30 days for allergy/asthma sufferers, reduce to 30 days during renovation, extend to 120 days for vacation homes that sit empty for extended periods. Minimum practical interval is 30 days.
