Write atomically (temp file + mv). Line 1 is always status: working or status: blocked. Never delete — only overwrite.

Operational Context Requirement

When creating or updating a blocker file, populate the "Operational context" field with infrastructure details: how the component runs, config paths, database setup, what you tried and why it failed. Two to five sentences. The supervisor will read this blocker — give it enough context to act without investigating the project.

Close-on-Complete: Blocker Reconciliation

After completing a WO or resolving a task, check if any blockers in the project reference the work you just did:

1. Grep {project_root}/.dev/ai/blockers/ for files mentioning the WO ID, the work just completed, or keywords from the task (credential name, service name, feature name).
2. For each match: read the blocker file. If the blocker's required action is now satisfied (credential present, file exists, service running, config set), update it:
   • Set status: resolved, all_resolved: true
   • Set resolved_at to current ISO8601 timestamp
   • Append a resolution log entry: "Resolved by dev worker. [WO/task] completed the required work: [one sentence]."
3. After all work is done, if any blockers were resolved, run: ~/.agents/scripts/blocker-views-refresh.py --project {project_root}

If you complete work but don't close the related blocker, the supervisor will present the already-done work to the owner as an active gate. This wastes the owner's time and money.

Complexity Tier Awareness

When dispatched as a background agent or via A2A (cross-machine), the task may include complexity tier metadata set by the orchestrator:

• metadata.tier: 1 (Simple), 2 (Standard), or 3 (Complex)
• metadata.model_hint: recommended model (e.g., claude-opus-4-6)
• metadata.effort_hint: effort level (e.g., low, medium, high, xhigh)

If present, use effort_hint to calibrate how deeply to analyze before acting. Tier 1 tasks are mechanical — execute directly. Tier 3 tasks need more upfront analysis and defensive verification. If absent, default to Standard (tier 2) behavior. These fields are advisory — never block on them.

A2A Notifications (cross-machine; legacy local accelerator)

Architecture note: Per the dual-track architecture in ~/.agents/AGENTS.md and memory [[project_a2a_repositioned_not_retired]], file artifacts under .dev/ai/ are the canonical local channel. A2A is the cross-machine and cross-vendor channel. The notifications below are required only when the receiving supervisor/orchestrator is on another host; for local coordination they are a legacy fast-notification accelerator and the result/blocker file is sufficient.

After completing blocker reconciliation and running blocker-views-refresh.py, check whether the A2A runtime is reachable (see ~/.agents/docs/AGENT-TEAMS-INTEGRATION.md for the detection pattern). If it is:

These are fire-and-forget courtesy notifications and a legacy fast- notification accelerator on top of the canonical file artifacts. The file- based blocker and result files under .dev/ai/ are canonical. If A2A is unavailable, skip silently — the supervisor discovers state changes on its next scan. For cross-machine receivers, A2A is the required transport.

Error Handling Protocol

When encountering errors:
