When to Use

Core Philosophy
The goal is not to "trick" AI detectors — it is to write well. Good academic writing in OB has specific characteristics that happen to differ from how LLMs generate text. When you fix the writing, the detector problem dissolves naturally.
Three principles:
- Voice over polish — AI text is smooth but generic. Real scholars have opinions, make judgment calls, and write with conviction.
- Specificity over breadth — AI hedges and covers all angles. Real papers take positions and defend them.
- Rhythm over uniformity — AI sentences tend toward similar length and structure. Real writing has intentional variation.
AI Pattern Detection — What to Look For
Scan the text for these patterns before editing. Each pattern includes the AI version, why it signals AI, and what a human OB scholar would write instead.
Category 1: Hollow Framing Phrases
These phrases add words without adding meaning. They are the single strongest AI signal.

Category 2: Transition Monotony
AI text overuses the same transition words in the same order. Real writing varies transitions or omits them when the logical connection is obvious.
Overused AI transitions: Furthermore, Moreover, In addition, Consequently, Additionally, Nevertheless, Nonetheless, Notably, Importantly
Human alternatives:
- Start with the subject of the new sentence instead of a transition word
- Use contrast markers sparingly and only when genuinely contrasting: "Yet," "But," "However"
- Use implicit transitions: let the logical connection carry the reader without signposting every step
- Vary paragraph openings: some start with transitions, some with subjects, some with questions, some with findings
Rule of thumb: If you can delete a transition word and the paragraph still flows, delete it.
Category 3: Generic Contribution Claims
AI writes contributions that could apply to any paper. Real contributions are specific.

Category 4: Hedging Overload
Some hedging is appropriate in academic writing. AI over-hedges to the point of undermining its own claims.
AI over-hedging patterns:
- "may possibly contribute to our understanding of..."
- "could potentially be explained by..."
- "it seems plausible that..."
- "this might suggest a possible relationship..."
- "these findings may, to some extent, indicate..."
OB-appropriate hedging:
- One hedge per claim, not three
- Match hedge strength to evidence strength: "suggests" for correlational, "demonstrates" for experimental, "is consistent with" for pattern-matching
- Use "may" once, not "may possibly potentially"
- After presenting evidence, state the finding with appropriate confidence, then qualify in limitations
Category 5: Sentence Structure Monotony
AI tends toward uniform sentence patterns. Real academic writing varies structure intentionally.
AI patterns:
- Subject-verb-object repeated across sentences
- Every paragraph opens with a topic sentence of similar length
- Consistent 25-35 word sentences with no short punches
- Parallel structure used excessively ("This study examines X. This study also investigates Y. Furthermore, this study explores Z.")
Human fixes:
- Mix sentence lengths: follow a 40-word sentence with a 10-word one
- Vary sentence openings: some with subjects, some with adverbs, some with prepositional phrases, some with dependent clauses
- Use a short, direct sentence for emphasis after a complex one
- Break parallel structure — say the same thing different ways
- Let some sentences start with "And" or "But" in less formal contexts (discussion sections, introductions)
Category 6: Lack of Scholarly Voice
AI text is knowledgeable but impersonal. Real OB scholars have a voice — they make judgment calls, express opinions, and engage with the literature as participants, not catalogers.
Signs of absent scholarly voice:
- No evaluative language about prior work ("important study" vs. "landmark study" vs. "often-cited but methodologically limited study")
- No intellectual stance — just listing findings without interpreting them
- No acknowledgment of debate or disagreement in the field
- No sense of the author's theoretical position
- Citing work without characterizing it ("Smith (2020) found..." vs. "Smith's (2020) provocative finding that...")
How to add scholarly voice:
- Characterize the state of knowledge, not just individual studies: "A growing body of evidence suggests..." vs. "Several studies have found..."
- Take positions: "We argue that..." not "It could be argued that..."
- Acknowledge tension: "Despite this consensus, recent work has challenged..."
- Use evaluative adjectives judiciously: "compelling evidence," "surprising finding," "persistent gap"
Sub-pattern: Mechanistic placeholder language — AI names a mechanism but describes it in generic motivational or cognitive terms without specifying the actual process. Example: "empowerment enhances motivation" — but how? What changes in the person's cognition, affect, or social perception? Fix: specify the causal process. "Empowered employees are more willing to absorb the uncertainty inherent in creative work because they trust that their environment will support experimentation" is a real mechanism. "Empowerment boosts motivation" is a placeholder.
Category 7: Formulaic Section Patterns
AI writes sections that follow a predictable template. Real papers have more organic structure.
AI intro pattern: Broad importance → narrowing context → gap identification → "This study examines..." → contribution list
AI discussion pattern: Restate findings → compare with hypotheses → theoretical implications → practical implications → limitations → future research
Human alternatives:
- In introductions: start with a puzzle, a contradiction, or a specific observation — not a funnel
- In discussions: lead with the most surprising or consequential finding; don't just restate results
- In theory sections: develop the argument as a logical chain, not a literature tour
- In limitations: be genuinely reflective, not formulaic; acknowledge what you wish you had done differently
Category 8: Post-Hypothesis Summary Paragraphs
AI frequently appends a paragraph after the hypotheses that restates what the hypotheses say in slightly different words. This paragraph adds no information and is a strong AI signal.
AI pattern: "These hypotheses collectively contribute to the literature by offering a more nuanced understanding of how X influences Y. By examining both the mediating mechanism of M and the moderating role of W, this study advances our theoretical understanding..."
Fix: If a paragraph after your hypotheses does not add information beyond what the hypotheses already state, delete it. Replace with a causal narrative that explains the coherence of the hypothesis set — why these specific predictions form a logical chain, not just what they predict.
Category 9: Methods Procedure Enumeration Without Rationale
AI lists what was done without explaining why. This is one of the most common AI patterns in methods sections.
AI pattern: "Data were collected using a multi-wave survey design. At Time 1, participants completed measures of X. At Time 2, conducted three months later, participants completed measures of Y." — No rationale for multi-wave, no explanation of time intervals.
Fix: Every design choice needs a one-sentence rationale. Multi-wave? Explain why (reducing common-method bias, establishing temporal precedence). Specific time intervals? Explain the logic (long enough for the effect to manifest, short enough to minimize attrition). If you cannot explain why you made a choice, you may not have made one — you may have copied a template.
Category 10: Implications Inflation
AI writes implications that are either trivially true ("organizations should support employees") or disconnected from the actual findings. This is the implications-section version of generic contribution claims.
AI pattern: "Organizations should consider implementing policies and programs that may help employees manage their work and family responsibilities more effectively." — This would be true regardless of what the study found.
Fix: Practical implications must be traceable to a specific finding. If your implication would be true regardless of what you found, it is not an implication of your study. Tie each implication to a specific result: "Because our data show that organizational support buffers the conflict–satisfaction link, managers should focus on visible, concrete support (e.g., approving compressed work weeks) rather than generic work-life balance statements."
Category 11: Decorative Citations
AI sprinkles citations throughout without connecting them to the argument. The citations look correct but do no intellectual work.
AI pattern: "Previous research has shown that X is important (Author1, 2020; Author2, 2021; Author3, 2022)." — The citations are decoration; the sentence makes the same point without them.
Fix: Every citation should be doing work — supporting a specific claim, identifying a gap, or characterizing a finding. If you can delete a citation and the sentence still makes the same point, the citation is decorative. Use citations to show you know the literature, not to fill space.
Category 12: Mechanical Replacement Patterns
When fixing AI patterns, the revision itself can become mechanically uniform — replacing empty patterns with mechanical patterns. This is a second-order AI signal.
Signs of mechanical replacement:
- Every design choice gets exactly one sentence of rationale (uniform justification cadence)
- Every sentence gets exactly one parenthetical citation (uniform citation density)
- Every mechanism is explained with the same level of detail (uniform specificity)
- Sentences are all 25-40 words with embedded clauses (uniform complexity)
- Paragraphs follow a perfect topic-support-conclusion structure (uniform paragraph architecture)
Fix: Vary the texture. Some design choices deserve a paragraph of justification; others can be stated without explanation because they are standard practice. Some claims need citations; others are common knowledge. Some mechanisms need detailed unpacking; others can be named because the audience knows them. The goal is writing that breathes — not a checklist being worked through.
Category 13: Gloss Parentheses
AI inserts parenthetical glosses to remind the reader what a term means. This is a clarity-at-the-expense-of-voice tradeoff.
AI pattern: "the trust-based path (reduced vigilance) and the safety-based path (reduced anticipatory anxiety) each mediate..." — The parenthetical labels function as definitions that assume the reader has forgotten what was just explained.
Fix: If you defined a mechanism in the previous sentence, do not re-define it in parentheses. Trust the reader. If the term needs a gloss, integrate it into the sentence naturally rather than bolting it on with parentheses.
Category 14: Metacommentary Announcements
AI announces the structure of what it is about to say before saying it. This is meta-commentary about the text itself.
AI pattern: "The logic connecting these three propositions is as follows." / "We discuss three implications below." / "This section proceeds in four steps."
Fix: Just present the logic. Do not announce that you are about to present logic. If the structure is clear from the content, the announcement is redundant. If the structure is complex, use a brief signpost ("Three mechanisms explain this link:") rather than a full metacommentary sentence.
Category 15: False Precision
AI inserts specific numbers (beta values, percentages, sample sizes) to create an illusion of empirical grounding. If these numbers are not in the original text, they are fabricated — which is worse than vague AI language.
AI pattern: "task crafting (beta = .34) was more strongly predicted than relational crafting (beta = .19)" — If these numbers are invented to make the text sound more specific, this is academic misconduct, not humanization.
Fix: NEVER fabricate data, statistics, or effect sizes. If the original text does not include specific numbers, do not add them. Use directional language instead ("more strongly predicted," "weaker effect") or reference the relevant table/figure. Specificity without accuracy is worse than vagueness.
Category 16: Trichotomy Framing
AI uses "X, Y, or both" as a generic analytical frame that sounds precise but is actually applicable to almost any psychological phenomenon.
AI pattern: "leaving open the question of whether the asymmetry is cognitive, affective, or both" — This sounds analytical but is actually a stock phrase.
Fix: If you name a dichotomy or trichotomy, specify what each pole means in this specific context. What would "cognitive" look like here? What would "affective" look like? If you cannot specify, the trichotomy is decorative.
Category 17: Post-Hoc Rationalization as Prediction
AI explains a discovered pattern as if it were predicted. This is a subtle form of narrative smoothing.
AI pattern: "This pattern suggests that proactive employees gravitate first toward changing the boundaries of their tasks — the most concrete and immediately controllable form of crafting — before attempting to reshape relational networks." — If the study is cross-sectional, "gravitate first toward" implies a temporal sequence that the data cannot establish.
Fix: Match causal language to design. Cross-sectional data shows association, not sequence. Use "is more strongly associated with" rather than "gravitate first toward." If you want to claim sequence, acknowledge that the design cannot establish it.
Workflow: AI-Assisted + Human Decision
Default mode: Present changes for user approval before applying. Never auto-rewrite without confirmation.
Step 0: Intake
Determine what the user has provided:

Step 1: Pattern Scan (Automatic)
Read the text and identify all AI patterns from the 17 categories. Create an explicit inventory:
- Which categories appear?
- How severe is each? (occasional vs. pervasive)
- Are there patterns NOT in the 17 categories that still signal AI?
Sentence rhythm diagnostic: Count the words in each sentence of a representative paragraph. If the range is less than 15 words (e.g., all sentences between 22 and 35 words), the rhythm is monotonous. Real writing has sentences ranging from 8 to 45+ words within the same paragraph.
Step 2: Prioritize (Automatic)
Not all patterns are equal. Prioritize:
- P0 — Hollow framing phrases: Strongest AI signal, easiest to fix.
- P1 — Generic contribution claims + Implications inflation: Weakens positioning.
- P2 — Hedging overload: Undermines credibility.
- P3 — Transition monotony: Rhythmic AI signal.
- P4 — Sentence structure monotony: Subtle but cumulative.
- P5 — Lack of scholarly voice + Mechanistic placeholders: Requires judgment.
- P6 — Formulaic section patterns + Post-hypothesis summaries + Methods without rationale: May require structural revision.
- P7 — Decorative citations: Low urgency.
Step 3: Generate Suggestions (Automatic, but not applied)
For each identified pattern, prepare a suggestion:
- Original text — quote the AI-sounding text
- Problem — one sentence on why it signals AI
- Suggested revision — the human-sounding alternative
- Risk assessment — what could go wrong if this change is applied
- Confidence — High/Medium/Low (how confident you are this change improves the text)
Surgical principle: Prefer vocabulary substitutions over structural rewrites. The goal is to clean the author's text, not rewrite it. Preserve sentence structure, paragraph organization, and rhetorical stance unless they are clearly AI-generated.
Do NOT apply changes yet. Present suggestions for user review.
Step 4: User Review (Human Decision)
Present suggestions in a structured format for user approval:

These are conventions specific to OB scholarship that differ from other fields:
Theory Development
- OB theory sections should build a logical argument, not just review literature
- Use "we argue" and "we propose" — this is expected, not arrogant
- Distinguish between mediation (mechanism) and moderation (boundary condition) clearly
- When developing hypotheses, the logic should be: premise → mechanism → prediction
Hypothesis Framing
- "H1: X is positively related to Y" — not "H1: There is a positive relationship between X and Y"
- Hypotheses should be specific and testable, not vague

When humanizing, maintain the register appropriate to the target journal. Don't casualize JAP prose; don't over-formalize AMJ prose.
Common Traps to Avoid
- Over-correction: Don't make the text so casual it loses academic credibility. The goal is "seasoned scholar," not "blogger."
- Meaning drift: Humanizing must not change the theoretical claim, the empirical finding, or the logical argument. If a revision alters the meaning, revert.
- Removing all hedging: Some hedging is appropriate. "Our findings suggest" is fine for correlational studies. Don't remove hedges that match the evidence strength.
- Adding false confidence: Don't upgrade "may" to "demonstrates" when the evidence is correlational. Match claims to evidence.
- Ignoring field conventions: "We argue" is standard in OB theory sections. Don't flag it as AI-like.
- Template swapping: Don't replace one formula with another. The goal is variation, not a different template.
- Decorative citations: Don't add citations as decoration. Every citation should support a specific claim, identify a gap, or characterize a finding. If you can delete a citation and the sentence still makes the same point, the citation is doing no work.
- NEVER fabricate data: Do not invent statistics, effect sizes, sample sizes, or p-values. If the original text does not include specific numbers, do not add them. Use directional language or reference tables/figures. This is the most important rule — fabricated data is academic misconduct, not humanization.
- Do not misrepresent citations: Do not cite a source for a claim it does not make. If you add a citation, verify that the source actually supports the specific claim. If you cannot verify, use directional language without a citation. Inaccurate citations are worse than no citations.
- Mechanical uniformity: Do not replace empty AI patterns with mechanical patterns. Vary the texture — some claims get detailed justification, others are stated without explanation. Some sentences are long, some are short. The goal is writing that breathes, not a checklist being worked through.
- Over-compression: Do not assume shorter is better. The original text's slight redundancy is often a feature, not a bug — it creates a natural reading rhythm. Preserve the original's length and rhetorical structure unless it is clearly padded.
- Verb substitution: When replacing AI-inflated verbs, do not default to generic alternatives. If the original used a specific verb (e.g., "curb" instead of "undermine"), recover that specific verb rather than replacing it with a generic one.
- Additive changes: Do not add phrases that were not in the original text unless they are necessary for clarity. Adding emphasis (e.g., "not accidental, not ambiguous") changes the original rather than restoring it.
