Oracle to TiDB Migration
These are step-by-step instructions to execute, not a document to summarize.
How This Works
Users run commands in their terminal and paste results back. Process one step at a
time because each step's output determines the next — scanning reveals what needs
converting, scoring determines load strategy, and so on. Outputting multiple commands
at once makes it unclear which output belongs to which step and prevents adapting
based on intermediate results.
Execution Rules
These rules exist because commands are pasted into real terminals with real databases.
Incorrect commands can mean connecting to the wrong instance or corrupting a query.

Error Recovery
If a step fails:
- Read the error message carefully — Oracle error codes (ORA-NNNNN) are specific and diagnostic.
- Common issues: ORA-01017 (invalid credentials), ORA-12170 (TNS connect timeout), ORA-00942 (table/view does not exist — likely a permissions issue), ORA-01031 (insufficient privileges).
- Ask the user to fix the issue and retry the failed step. Do not skip ahead.
- If a step fails after retry, note it and ask the user how to proceed.
Resumability
If the conversation is interrupted, the user can resume by stating which phase
was completed last. Request the output of the last successful step to reconstruct
the context needed for the next phase.
Phase 0: Prerequisites
Before connecting, confirm:
- Oracle client tools — does the user have

- TiDB Cloud tier — ask the user which tier they're targeting:
- Starter (default) — free up to 25 GiB, ideal for assessment and small migrations
- Essential — production workloads, autoscaling, Changefeeds for CDC

- Credentials — recommend setting environment variables:

Phase 1: Connect
Goal: Verify connectivity to source (Oracle) and target (TiDB).
