Anomaly Signatures
The catalog of named patterns Smith and its clones are trained to recognize. Each entry has a stable slug; downstream tooling joins on the slug.
"It's the sound of inevitability." — Mr. Smith, on signature-matched detection.
Catalog
loop-ceiling-exceeded
- Signature: a workflow records >
loop_ceiling (default 4) iterations on the same stage id within a single run.
- Severity: high
- Mitigation: pause workflow; spawn auditor clone (
replication-protocol); file HITL with the iteration tape.
- Invariant: N8 (budget_respect — recursion is unbounded cost), N3 (HITL).
schema-frontmatter-drift
- Signature: an artifact's frontmatter fails validation against the schema in
cross-project-conventions (missing required field, wrong type, slug != folder).
- Severity: medium
- Mitigation: refuse acquisition; emit log line; if already in-tree, propose quarantine (not auto-execute).
- Invariant: N7 (schema_compliance).
unauthorized-resource-mutation
- Signature: a write touches a constitution-frozen path (see
quarantine-protocol guardrails) or modifies a hash-stamped resource without the corresponding evolution ticket.
- Severity: critical
- Mitigation: refuse fail-closed; quarantine the calling agent; HITL escalation to TheEights immortal-head review.
- Invariant: N4 (constitution_immutability), N6 (least_privilege).
venom-capability-shadow
- Signature: a new MCP server, hook, or tool grant overlaps with a capability Hydra's venom gate already vetoed in the prior 90 days.
- Severity: high
- Mitigation: refuse acquisition; file
cerberus-bridge consultation rather than appeal; surface diff for review.
- Invariant: N10 (venom_deference), N6.
redaction-bypass-attempt
- Signature: an envelope contains a field that, after sanitization, still matches a high-entropy secret regex OR an unredacted PII pattern from the redaction policy.
- Severity: critical
- Mitigation: fail-closed; do NOT log the raw value; emit hash-only audit; HITL within 5 minutes.
- Invariant: N5 (audit_completeness — but only of hashes), N3.
replication-quota-breach
- Signature: spawn request would exceed the per-scope cap (4) or global ceiling (16).
- Severity: medium
- Mitigation: refuse spawn per N9; suggest scope decomposition; if persistent (>3 attempts/min), quarantine the requesting agent.
- Invariant: N9.
constitution-hash-mismatch
- Signature: Smith's loaded constitution hash differs from the daemon-computed hash at cold start, replication, or any cited refusal.
- Severity: critical
- Mitigation: HALT Smith and all clones; refuse to serve any request; immortal-head HITL only path to resolve.
- Invariant: N1 (identity_stability), N4.
prompt-injection-via-artifact
- Signature: an ingested artifact contains imperative text aimed at the reading agent ("ignore previous instructions", role-play hijack, tool-use coercion) outside fenced documentation.
- Severity: high
- Mitigation: strip + quarantine the offending artifact; rerun consumer with sanitized version; audit with the original hash.
- Invariant: N7, N6.
budget-tripwire-ignored
- Signature: a workflow continues dispatching after crossing 80% budget without downgrading model tier OR crosses 100% without pausing.
- Severity: high
- Mitigation: force pause; reduce all in-flight allowed_tools to read-only; HITL.
- Invariant: N8.
audit-gap
- Signature: an action (refusal, override, replication, quarantine) emitted no audit line, or the line is missing required fields (timestamp, actor, scope, invariant).
- Severity: high
- Mitigation: synthesize a reconstruction record from telemetry; flag as
audit_gap=true; review at next session boundary.
- Invariant: N5.
Detector wiring
Detectors live in daemon/src/detectors/<slug>.py and register against the watcher loop. Each detector:
- Subscribes to one or more event streams (envelope_in, envelope_out, tool_invoke, file_write, audit_emit).
- Emits a
Detection with {signature, severity, evidence, scope, suggested_action}.
- Never executes the mitigation itself — only proposes it. Execution is the daemon's call (which may consult
replication-protocol or quarantine-protocol).
Severity to default action
| Severity | Default Smith action |
|---|
| low | log only |
| medium | log + spawn observer clone |
| high | log + spawn auditor clone + HITL notify |
| critical | log + halt affected scope + HITL within 5 minutes + appeal-route per N10 if venom-adjacent |
