Conflict Design

Use this skill when brainstorming scenes, designing character relationships, or planning any interpersonal tension.

Core Principle

Conflict must grow from who the characters are, not from what the plot needs. If the conflict disappears when one character makes a different choice unrelated to their core self, it is external—a plot mechanism, not a story.

The most durable conflicts are structural: each character's nature makes getting what they want collide with the other's pursuit. Neither side is wrong. Winning requires sacrificing something the character also values.

Character-driven vs. plot-driven conflict

Character-driven: A character who cannot trust is in a relationship that requires trust. Every choice they make both expresses who they are and damages what they love.

Plot-driven: A misunderstanding separates two characters who would otherwise agree. A villain obstructs a protagonist whose only defining trait is the goal.

The test: if both characters had different personalities, would this conflict still exist? If yes, it is plot-driven. Revise toward conflict that only these two people in exactly these roles could generate.

What conflict reveals

Strong conflict forces a character to show something they would prefer to hide—a need, a fear, a capacity for cruelty or self-deception they have not acknowledged. The reader learns who the character actually is, not who they perform to be.

Anti-patterns

• Conflict resolved by new information or outside intervention rather than character decision.
• An external threat that unites the characters and dissolves the tension between them.
• An antagonist whose only function is obstruction; no coherent desire of their own.
• A climax that arrives before the character has genuinely confronted their own contradiction.
• Conflict that one honest conversation would dissolve.

Checklist

• What does each character want, and why does their nature make getting it collide with the other?
• What does this conflict force each character to reveal about themselves?
• What would be lost if this conflict were removed—an event, or something essential about who these people are?
• Does the resolution require a character decision, not an external fix?
