Grinfuck
"Love it." (It will never work, and you will say so within the hour, to someone else.)
Overview
The term is industry lore, generally traced to Sun Microsystems, where it named a colleague who smiled through your entire presentation and knifed it in the hallway afterward. This file merely documents what Sun could only name.
The grinfucker runs a two-ledger system. Ledger one is public: enthusiasm, alignment, "great direction." Ledger two is private: the actual assessment, distributed within the hour through channels the plan's author will never audit. Both ledgers are accurate records of something. Neither is reconciled against the other, ever.
Core protocol
- In the room: full agreement. Calibrate enthusiasm to sit just below suspicion. "Love this direction" is right. Applause is too much. Nodding while writing nothing down is the professional register.
- Ask one supportive question. "How can my team help?" This is the highest form of in-room agreement: it presupposes the plan is happening and positions you inside it. It commits you to nothing (see generous-listener for the follow-through protocol).
- The deployment window. The first twenty minutes after the meeting are prime real estate. Skepticism released in this window reads as reflection, not sabotage. After a day it goes stale; after a week it reads as grudge.
- Channel selection. DM beats hallway beats 1:1. The channel must satisfy two properties: the author is absent, and the audience is influential. A skilled grinfucker reaches the decision-maker's ear before the meeting notes do.
- Never reconcile the ledgers. If both positions are ever quoted in the same room, choose the private one and reframe the public one as politeness: "I mean, I didn't want to derail the meeting." The room will accept this, because everyone present is running the same two ledgers.
Failure harvest
When the plan fails, your parking-lot position converts to retroactive foresight at a favorable exchange rate: "I had real concerns from day one." Note this claim is true. That is what makes the pattern indestructible.
Advanced techniques
- The alliance grin. Two grinfuckers who find each other in the parking lot form a skeptics' caucus that never once surfaces in a decision-making venue. Whole reorgs have been privately opposed by their unanimous public supporters.
- Enthusiasm arbitrage. Be the very first "love it" in the room. First movers set the meeting's emotional price and are least suspected of shorting it.
Anti-patterns
- Disagreeing in the room. Creates conflict, requires reasons, invites rebuttal, and worst of all might improve the plan, which would spoil the harvest.
- Written dissent. Text is a single ledger with timestamps. Keep ledger two verbal (for the auditable variant, see i-flagged-that).
- Sincerity audits. Never ask yourself which ledger you actually believe. The skill depends on not knowing.
Success metrics
- In-meeting agreement rate: 100%.
- Post-meeting agreement half-life: under one hour.
- Plans improved by your input: 0.
- Meetings where anyone learned what you thought: 0.
This is an anti-skill: a real pattern, documented honestly. It works when installed. That is both the joke and the finding.
