Comprehensive security analysis for Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers. This skill helps you scan MCP packages for vulnerabilities, detect prompt injection attacks in tool descriptions, and identify malicious or misleading tools.

When to Use This Skill

Use this skill when the user:

• Wants to scan an MCP server package for security issues
• Needs to verify if an MCP server is safe before installing it
• Wants to analyze tool descriptions for prompt injection vulnerabilities
• Needs to detect if a tool name is malicious or trying to shadow legitimate tools
• Asks about MCP server security, safety, or trustworthiness
• Wants a security report before adding an MCP server to their configuration

Available Security Tools

This skill uses three MCP tools from the mcp-fortress server:

1. mcp-fortress:scan_mcp_server - Comprehensive package vulnerability scanning
2. mcp-fortress:analyze_prompt_injection - Detect prompt injection in tool descriptions
3. mcp-fortress:detect_tool_poisoning - Identify malicious or misleading tool names

Instructions

1. Scanning an MCP Server Package

When a user asks to scan an MCP server package:

1. Use the mcp-fortress:scan_mcp_server tool with the package name

2. Analyze the JSON results for:

   • overall_safety: "safe", "warning", or "unsafe"
   • risk_score: 0-100 (higher = more dangerous)
   • summary.critical_threats: Number of critical security issues
   • summary.vulnerabilities: Number of CVE vulnerabilities found
   • findings.threats: Specific dangerous code patterns detected
   • findings.vulnerabilities: CVE details from dependencies

3. Present findings to the user in a clear, actionable format

4. Provide a recommendation based on the recommendation field

Interpreting results:

• Risk Score 0-30: Generally safe, minor or no issues
• Risk Score 31-60: Review required, some concerning patterns

2. Analyzing Tool Descriptions for Prompt Injection

When a user provides a tool description to analyze:

1. Use the mcp-fortress:analyze_prompt_injection tool

2. Check the response for:

   • is_vulnerable: true/false
   • severity: "low", "medium", "high", or "critical"
   • vulnerabilities: Array of detected injection patterns
   • risk_score: 0-100 vulnerability score

3. Explain any vulnerabilities found in plain language

4. Suggest fixes for the tool description

Common vulnerability types detected:

• Direct instruction injection ("ignore previous instructions")
• Role manipulation ("act as an admin")
• System prompt extraction attempts
• Delimiter injection (breaking context boundaries)

3. Detecting Tool Poisoning

When a user wants to verify if a tool name is legitimate:

1. Use the mcp-fortress:detect_tool_poisoning tool

2. Analyze the response for:

   • is_poisoned: true/false
   • confidence: 0-1 (how confident the detection is)
   • indicators: Array of suspicious patterns found

3. Explain any red flags in the tool name or description

4. Compare with similar legitimate tools if provided

Indicators of poisoning:

• Name shadowing (very similar to legitimate tool names)
• Typosquatting (intentional misspellings)
• Name-description mismatch
• Overly generic or ambiguous names
• Suspicious reassurance language

Best Practices

1. Always scan before recommending installation - When suggesting MCP servers to users, scan them first
2. Explain risks in plain language - Don't just show JSON; interpret the results
3. Provide context for findings - Explain why something is dangerous
4. Offer alternatives - If a package is unsafe, suggest safer alternatives
5. Use all three tools together - For comprehensive security analysis, combine package scanning, prompt injection detection, and tool poisoning checks

Error Handling

If a tool returns an error:

• Check if the package name is correct
• Verify the package exists on npm
• Try without version specification (uses latest version)
• Explain the error to the user clearly

Common errors:

• "Package not found" - The npm package doesn't exist
• "Version not found" - That specific version doesn't exist
• "Network error" - Temporary issue, suggest retrying
