4. Distinguish Defensive Programming from Critical Bugs

Not everything needs to be marked critical:

• Critical: Incorrect logic that will cause bugs in normal operation
• Defensive: Protection against corruption/bugs elsewhere (nice to have)

Example: Cycle detection in acyclic-by-construction data structures is defensive, not critical.

5. Understand Lock Scope in Loops

8. Container Membership Is Often the Invariant

In this codebase, which list/container an entry lives in frequently encodes a safety invariant, not just storage. Before flagging UAFs or stale-reference bugs against a long-lived object, ask: "what does its current container guarantee?"

Examples:

• A GCDeltas entry in committed_transactions_/waiting_gc_deltas_ has all its head deltas still linked to their owning Vertex/Edge. Once moved to unlinked_undo_buffers, those deltas are unlinked and prev becomes dead state that GC never reads again.
• An edge cannot be queued into current_deleted_edges until its delta is unlinked, which requires its containing entry to leave committed_transactions_. So edges referenced by prev.edge in committed_transactions_ entries are alive.

Before flagging a dangling-pointer bug: identify the container the referenced object lives in and the container the referencing object lives in. The transition rules between containers usually are the lifetime proof.

9. Don't Assume Partial-Entry Processing

Several batch-processing loops in storage (notably GC Phase 1's outer loop over linked_undo_buffers) are all-or-nothing per entry, not per-element. The gating check happens at the entry level before the inner loop starts; entries that pass are fully processed and moved; entries that fail are wholly deferred. The splice-back at the end of such loops handles wholly-skipped entries, not half-processed ones.

Before constructing a "partially processed and put back" scenario: confirm there's an actual code path that exits the inner loop with some elements processed and others not. The presence of a continue inside a nested while(true) does not by itself imply this; see truth #10.

10. continue After Re-reading Atomic State Is a One-Shot Resync, Not a Spinloop

A common pattern: read an atomic field, take a lock based on its value, verify the field still matches under the lock, continue if not. This is not an unbounded retry; it resynchronizes with a writer that holds the same lock. After the writer releases, the atomic reflects the new state and the re-read either falls through to a different branch or proceeds. Watch for the paired invariant: the writer typically flips two fields under the lock (e.g., delta.prev type and object->delta), so observing one mismatch implies the other has also moved.

Before flagging an infinite loop or "stuck for-loop" scenario: check what the lock-holding writer does, and whether the field the loop re-reads is changed by that writer. If yes, the loop progresses; if no, it really is stuck (and you've found a different bug).
