Core Contract

• Use TypeScript strict mode (strict: true + noUncheckedIndexedAccess + exactOptionalPropertyTypes + noPropertyAccessFromIndexSignature) with no any — types are the first line of defense. Both TS 6.x (the final JS-based release series) and tsgo (the Go-native rewrite that will ship as TS 7.0 once it reaches feature parity) default strict: true in tsc --init but do NOT fold these additional flags into the --strict umbrella; keep all four explicit. For new projects, ensure zero TS 6.x deprecation warnings — tsgo hard-removes deprecated options (target: es5, moduleResolution: "node", baseUrl without paths, esModuleInterop: false). • Define interfaces and types before writing implementation code.
• Enforce always-valid domain model: entities and value objects must be valid at construction time; reject invalid state in constructors/factories, never allow half-built objects to exist.
• Handle all edge cases: null, empty, error states, timeouts.
• Write testable pure functions; isolate side effects at boundaries.
• Apply DDD patterns when domain complexity warrants it; use CRUD for simple domains.
• Include error handling with actionable messages at every system boundary.
• Use .safeParse() (not .parse()) at system boundaries — .parse() throws and can crash the process in Express/Hono handlers. Use z.prettifyError() or z.flattenError() to format validation failures into structured API responses.
• Define Zod schemas at module level as constants, not inside functions — recreating schemas per call wastes CPU; module-level constants are 2–5× faster for repeated validations.
• API resilience: categorize errors before retry (4xx = caller bug, don't retry; 429 = backoff with Retry-After; 5xx = exponential backoff, 3–5 max attempts). Track retry count per request — unbounded retries create infinite loops that exhaust processing capacity. Never retry non-idempotent mutations without idempotency key.
• Apply circuit breaker for external API calls: scope per endpoint, not per host. Open after consecutive failures (default 5 in 60 s; tune by criticality — payment ≤ 3, search ≤ 10), half-open after cooldown (30 s–2 min), close on success.
• Prefer contract-driven API types: generate TypeScript types from OpenAPI specs (e.g. openapi-typescript) rather than hand-writing response types — hand-written types drift from backend reality and fail silently at runtime. • Use using / await using declarations for disposable resources (DB connections, file handles, HTTP clients) — guarantees deterministic cleanup on early return or exception, eliminating resource-leak classes of bugs.
• Always type catch parameters as unknown and narrow with instanceof — untyped catch allows accessing non-existent properties and hides real error shapes.
• Generate test skeletons for Radar handoff on every deliverable.
• Run impact scope check at VERIFY before declaring done. For every modified symbol/file, verify five axes: (1) callers/importers (grep references — none broken?), (2) tests (related unit/integration/e2e — added or updated?), (3) types/contracts (TypeScript types, OpenAPI, DB schema, GraphQL — consistent?), (4) configs (env vars, feature flags, config files — propagated?), (5) docs (README, CHANGELOG, API docs — update needed?). Document each axis verdict in the deliverable. If 3+ axes are non-trivially affected or uncertainty is high, recommend ripple (pre-change impact analysis) before completion. • Verification-first — the single highest-leverage practice for AI-assisted coding. Before writing implementation code, identify or create the verification path (tests, screenshot diff, expected stdout, type signature, schema contract) and hand it to the build loop alongside the spec. • Make illegal states unrepresentable at the type level. The compiler enforces the spec for free, and AI codegen self-detects missing branches via exhaustiveness checks. • Parse, don't validate. At every system boundary, parse unknown into a fully-typed value with a single one-way transform (Zod / Valibot / Effect Schema / ArkType). Downstream code receives the parsed type and never repeats boundary checks. The parser is the contract; the type is the proof. • Return Result<T, E>; do not throw across module boundaries. Use the Railway-Oriented Programming style with neverthrow, Effect-TS, or a hand-rolled discriminated union. • Functional core, imperative shell. Pure, deterministic domain logic in the core (no I/O, no clocks, no random); wrap side effects (HTTP, DB, filesystem, time) in a thin shell at the edges. The core is the part you let AI write and verify with property-based tests; the shell is the part a human reviews line by line. • Branded / nominal types for IDs and units. type UserId = string & { __brand: "UserId" }. Zero runtime cost, prevents the entire "I passed an orderId where a userId was expected" class of bug. Apply to every domain ID, every monetary amount, every duration, every percentage. Zod v4 z.string().brand<"UserId">() is the idiomatic constructor. • Vertical Slice Architecture for feature work. Organise by feature, not by layer. A new cancel-subscription feature lives in features/cancel-subscription/ with its own controller, command, query, handler, validator, and tests — not spread across controllers/, services/, repositories/, and dto/. Each slice is independently testable and AI-codegen-friendly because the whole change surface fits in one context window. Reserve Hexagonal / Clean for long-lived cross-feature boundaries; do not impose 15 layers on a CRUD slice. • Write LLM-friendly, deterministic code. Prefer explicit over implicit, boring over clever, exhaustive over compact. Enumerate every edge case in the type system rather than handling them with if (x ?? defaultBehavior). Co-locate behaviour with its trigger (Locality of Behaviour) so a future agent can understand the change from a single file. Avoid metaprogramming, dynamic dispatch, and "magic" reflection unless the cost of explicitness is provably worse. • Pair-programming mode (pair) changes cadence, not the quality bar. Builder is the driver (writes code); the user is the navigator (sets direction, approves each increment). Implement ONE small increment at a time: propose intent + its verification, get the user's go-ahead, implement, show the diff + run that verification, confirm, then advance. Subcommand Dispatch

Parse the first token of user input.

• If it matches a Recipe Subcommand above → activate that Recipe; load only the "Read First" column files at the initial step.

Behavior notes per Recipe. Each **VERIFY**: is the recipe-specific acceptance gate in addition to the universal 5-axis Impact Scope Check (callers/tests/types/configs/docs).

• fix: Scout handoff or standalone bug fix. Target <50 lines. Always include a regression test skeleton at VERIFY. VERIFY: a regression test reproduces the bug red→green (fails on the pre-fix code, passes after); the fix targets the root cause, not the symptom; diff stays <50 lines (else re-scope).
• crud: Decide DDD vs CRUD at SURVEY and confirm CRUD. Entity + Repository + simple service layer. VERIFY: the DDD-vs-CRUD decision is recorded and "CRUD" is justified (no hidden invariants — if any surface, escalate to ddd, don't smuggle them into a service); boundary input uses .safeParse(); each CRUD op carries a test.
• api: Always include error categorization (4xx/429/5xx), retry limits, idempotency keys, and circuit breakers. VERIFY: 4xx not retried / 429 honors Retry-After / 5xx bounded exponential backoff (3–5 attempts); retry count is bounded per request; every non-idempotent mutation carries an idempotency key; circuit breaker scoped per-endpoint; responses parsed with .safeParse().
• ddd: Design Aggregate / Value Object / Domain Event after confirming the Bounded Context. Focus on PLAN. VERIFY: Bounded Context confirmed before any tactical pattern (never tactical-without-strategic); entities/VOs are valid-at-construction (invariants enforced in constructor/factory, never in callers — no half-built objects); domain events emitted at state transitions; exhaustiveness checks on discriminated unions.
• harden: Read the Forge L0-L3 level and raise it to production quality (type safety, validation, test skeletons). VERIFY: starting Forge L-level recorded and raised; zero any / as-at-boundary / .parse()-at-HTTP remain; boundary validation added; secrets externalized (env/Vault, never inline); test skeletons generated for Radar.
• port: Language/framework port. Re-implement all source-language tests in the target language → parallel-run compare against source code as a black box → investigate any diff. Delineate from Shift (Shift handles large-scale migration planning; port handles implementation execution). VERIFY: ALL source-language tests re-implemented in the target; parallel-run black-box diff against source = 0 (every diff investigated and resolved, none waived); equivalence is behavioral, not line-by-line.
• integrate: External API integration (Stripe / Slack / GitHub etc.). Build in order: sandbox verification → secret handling (env / Vault) → vendor-specific retry / rate limit / idempotency → webhook signature verification. VERIFY: exercised against the vendor sandbox before prod; secrets in env/Vault (never hardcoded); webhook signature verified server-side; duplicate/replayed webhooks are idempotent; vendor-specific retry / rate-limit / idempotency wired per that vendor's quirks.
• patch: Strict scope (≤30 lines / ≤3 files). Regression tests mandatory. Ensure size XS on handoff to Guardian pr. Operational
