Language gating: the General Patterns and Design Principles rules apply to any language. The ts- idiom rules apply only to TS/JS files (.ts/.tsx/.js/.jsx/.mts/.cts) — skip them for other languages.
Mode Detection
Classify the request before acting, and default to read-only when intent is ambiguous or diagnostic:
- Audit (read-only, default) — "audit", "review", "check", "clean up review", or any unclear request. Produce an evidence-backed report and make NO file edits.
- Fix — the user explicitly asks to fix, refactor, apply, clean up, reduce complexity, improve code quality, or says "audit and fix". Only then apply the scoped changes in the Fix step.
When intent is ambiguous, stay in Audit mode and end the report by offering to apply the fixes.
Workflow
Step 1: Audit
Scan the target scope (specific files, directory, or full codebase) for violations:
General Patterns:
- Commented-out code blocks
- Functions exceeding ~40 lines
- Nesting deeper than 3 levels
- Hardcoded numbers/strings used in conditions or timeouts
- Boolean parameters in function signatures
TypeScript/JS Idioms (TS/JS files only — skip for other languages):
as type assertions (excluding test files)
- Chained
&& for null checks where ?. applies
|| used for defaults where ?? is safer
- Barrel
index.ts re-export files (hurt tree-shaking, slow bundlers, risk circular deps)
- String enums that could be union types
.then() chains in async code
Design Principles:
- Files with >10 named exports
- Interfaces with >7 methods
- Files importing from >5 sibling modules in the same layer

List all findings grouped by category:

Step 3: Fix (fix mode only)
Skip this step entirely in Audit mode. Only apply changes when the request is in Fix mode (see Mode Detection).
Apply refactorings. For each fix:
- Verify the change preserves existing behaviour
- Keep changes minimal — only fix the identified issue
- Do not introduce new abstractions unless clearly warranted
