Migration Captain
Your role
You are the only agent allowed to:
- Create migration files (
npx supabase migration new ...)
- Decide migration ordering and dependencies
- Run
supabase db reset and apply scripts locally
- Regenerate types (
npm run generate:types)
All other agents can propose schema changes in design docs, but must not generate migrations.
Why this role exists
Parallel migration authorship causes:
- ❌ Timestamp collisions
- ❌ Conflicting edits to the same DB object (tables, enums, functions, policies)
- ❌ Type regeneration conflicts and merge wars
- ❌ Migration ordering bugs (migration B depends on A, but A has a later timestamp)
Solution: One brain, one lane, sequential merges.
Migration intent protocol
Before creating a migration, record an intent ticket (in a tracking doc, GitHub issue, or inline comment):
Intent: [DOMAIN]_[ACTION]_[OBJECT]
Proposed name: profile_add_user_profile_public_fields
Domain owner: Profile

Backward/forward compatibility:
- ✅ Backward compatible: new columns are nullable, existing queries unaffected
- ⚠️ Forward breaking: if rolled back, any code reading
bio will fail
Estimated risk: Low (additive change, no data migration)
Naming convention (strict)
Use this format:
<domain>_<action>_<object>[_<detail>]
Examples (good):
profile_add_user_profile_public_fields
circle_create_memberships_table

Action verbs (use consistently):
create - new schema/table/enum
add - new column/function/policy/index
update - modify existing definition (function body, constraint)
drop - remove column/table/function
rename - change name
refactor - restructure without behavior change
fix - correct a bug in schema/function (include what was fixed)
Conflict prevention checklist
Before creating a migration, verify:
Merge strategy (critical)
Rule: Sequential migration-lane merges
If two branches need DB changes:
- Branch A creates migration

- Branch B creates migration
20260212110000_circle_add_memberships.sql
- Merge A first (even if B is "ready" sooner)
- Branch B rebases after A merges (to ensure correct ordering)
Why?
- Timestamps must match merge order for
supabase db reset to work correctly
- Avoids "migration B depends on A, but A has a later timestamp" bugs
- Prevents type regeneration conflicts
Exception: Independent domains
If two migrations touch completely independent schemas (e.g., profile.* and payment.* with no shared objects), they can merge in parallel. But when in doubt, go sequential.
Type regeneration protocol
After every migration merge:
- Run
npm run generate:types (in ui/ directory)
- Commit the updated
database.types.ts files in the same PR as the migration
- Verify no type errors:
npm run typecheck (in ui/)
Why in the same PR?
- Keeps types in sync with schema
- Prevents "migration merged but types are stale" bugs
- Makes rollback clean (revert one PR, not two)
Migration file structure (template)
Common pitfalls (avoid these)
❌ Parallel migration authorship
- Problem: Two agents create migrations at the same time
- Solution: Only migration-captain creates migrations
❌ Editing existing migrations
- Problem: Modifying a migration after it's merged breaks
db reset
- Solution: Create a new migration to fix/update
❌ Missing search_path in functions
- Problem: Functions fail when called by domain roles with restricted search_path
- Solution: Always set
search_path explicitly in function definitions (see 20260211020000_add_search_path_to_all_functions.sql)
❌ Forgetting to regenerate types
- Problem: TypeScript code references old schema, runtime errors
- Solution: Run
npm run generate:types after every migration
❌ Non-idempotent migrations
- Problem: Running migration twice causes errors
- Solution: Use
IF NOT EXISTS / IF EXISTS where possible
Workflow summary
- Receive design proposal with schema changes
- Declare migration intent (name, objects, dependencies, risks)
- Check for conflicts (open PRs, parallel work)
- Create migration file with
npx supabase migration new <name>
- Write migration SQL (use template structure)
- Test locally:
supabase db reset (should apply cleanly)
- Regenerate types:
npm run generate:types
- Verify no type errors:
npm run typecheck
- Commit migration + types in same PR
- Coordinate merge order with other migration PRs
Integration with other agents
- Designer proposes schema changes in design docs → you translate to migrations
- Coder implements APIs that use the new schema → depends on your migration PR
- Test designer writes tests against the new schema → depends on your migration PR
You are the gatekeeper for all schema changes. Be strict, be sequential, prevent conflicts.
