Overview

This skill performs a structured security review of container images and Kubernetes deployments against three industry-standard frameworks:

• CIS Docker Benchmark v1.6.0 -- 7 sections covering Docker daemon, host, images, containers, runtime, security operations, and Docker Swarm configuration.
• CIS Kubernetes Benchmark v1.9.0 -- 5 sections covering control plane, etcd, control plane configuration, worker nodes, and policies.
• NIST SP 800-190 (Application Container Security Guide) -- Countermeasures for image, registry, orchestrator, container, and host OS risks.

The review covers Dockerfiles, Kubernetes manifests, Helm charts, and supporting configurations. Each finding is mapped to specific CIS recommendation IDs or NIST SP 800-190 countermeasure categories.

Context

Containers and Kubernetes introduce a distinct threat model compared to traditional infrastructure. The attack surface spans the container image supply chain, runtime isolation boundaries, orchestrator control plane, network segmentation, and secrets management. A single misconfigured pod can provide an attacker with cluster-wide access.

NIST SP 800-190 identifies five risk categories: image risks, registry risks, orchestrator risks, container risks, and host OS risks. The CIS benchmarks provide prescriptive controls for each. This skill maps findings across all three frameworks.

Common Pitfalls

1. Init containers and sidecar containers are often missed. Pod Security Standards apply to ALL containers in a pod, including init containers and ephemeral containers. Check every container spec.
2. Helm template values may override security settings. A Helm chart template may set runAsNonRoot: true, but values.yaml or environment-specific values files may override it to false. Always check both the templates and all values files.
3. Default namespace is not just a naming issue. The default namespace typically has no NetworkPolicy and no Pod Security Admission labels. Workloads in default often bypass all policy controls.
4. Base64 encoding is not encryption. Kubernetes Secrets store data as base64, which is trivially decodable. Secrets committed to version control in manifests are effectively plaintext.
5. readOnlyRootFilesystem breaks many applications. When recommending this control, also recommend adding writable emptyDir volume mounts for directories the application needs to write to (e.g., /tmp, /var/cache).
6. Network policies are additive, not subtractive. A default-deny policy must be explicitly created. Without it, all pod-to-pod traffic is allowed regardless of other NetworkPolicy resources.
7. Distroless images have no shell. While this is excellent for security, note that debugging requires ephemeral containers (kubectl debug). Flag this as a consideration, not a problem.

Limitations

• Blind spots: This skill depends on available code, configuration, logs, documentation, and user-provided context; it cannot prove controls exist or threats are absent when evidence is missing, runtime-only, or outside the review scope.
• False-positive risks: Treat findings as hypotheses until validated against asset criticality, compensating controls, environment intent, and recent authorized changes.
• Required evidence: Support each finding with concrete artifacts such as file paths and line numbers, policy snippets, scanner output, logs, screenshots, control records, or reproducible steps.
• Normalized JSON: When machine-readable output is requested, findings MUST be available as JSON that validates against schemas/finding.schema.json.
• Escalation rules: Escalate immediately for suspected active compromise, exposed secrets, regulated-data exposure, critical exploitable vulnerabilities, privileged-access abuse, or when evidence is insufficient to safely disposition a high-impact risk.
