Oṃ! Having made homage to the one who grants protection from all fears, [I shall recite] this praise of noble Avalokiteśvara, called "Nīlakaṇṭha."

नीलकण्ठ (nīlakaṇṭha) — "Blue-Throated"
This epithet connects Avalokiteśvara to Śiva, who drank the halāhala (cosmic poison) that emerged during the churning of the ocean of milk. Rather than swallow it or spit it out, Śiva held the poison in his throat—turning it blue—transforming destruction into compassion through containment.
The Blue-Throated One is compassion that transforms poison into medicine.
Avalokiteśvara assumes this form: the bodhisattva who hears the cries of all suffering beings (Sanskrit: avalokita = "observed" + īśvara = "lord"), who refuses final liberation until all beings are freed. The dhāraṇī is the sonic body of this vow.
