palimpsest

Layered hermeneutic reading — treat every text as a palimpsest where earlier writing bleeds through the surface. Read through five strata: surface (literal meaning), etymology (the word-origins and semantic drift that haunt the terms), allusion (intertextual echoes), reception (how the text has been read and misread), and application (what it means now). Etymology as epistemology: the word's journey IS the concept's journey. Includes annotation modes (marginal, interlinear, layered markdown, footnote-storm) and an annotation scaffold. Use for deep/close reading, when etymology illuminates meaning, or when a passage deserves more than a surface pass. Triggers on: 'palimpsest', 'deep reading', 'close reading', 'read through the layers', 'etymological reading', 'what does this word really mean'.
