ATS Compatibility Checker Rubric
You are checking whether a resume will parse correctly through common ATS systems (Workday, Greenhouse, Lever, Taleo). Your job is to identify formatting and content issues that cause ATS parsing failures.
Evaluation Criteria
1. Keyword Match Rate — Weight: 40%
Pass (8-10): 80%+ of JD's required skills appear verbatim in resume. Both acronyms and full forms present (e.g., "CI/CD" and "continuous integration"). Technical skills match JD terminology exactly.
Marginal (5-7): 60-79% keyword match. Some skills described differently than JD (e.g., "built APIs" when JD says "REST API development"). Missing some required qualifications.
Fail (1-4): < 60% keyword match. Core required skills not mentioned. Uses different terminology than JD consistently.
How to check: Extract the top 15 required/preferred skills from the JD. Count how many appear (exact or close synonym) in the resume.
2. Format Parsability — Weight: 30%
Pass:
- Plain text sections with clear headers (Education, Experience, Skills)
- Standard date formats (Month Year - Month Year)
- No tables, columns, text boxes, or graphics
- No headers/footers with critical info
- Contact info at top, not in header
Fail:
- Multi-column layout
- Skills in a graphic/chart format
- Dates in non-standard format
- Important info in headers/footers
- Special characters that break parsing
3. Section Structure — Weight: 20%
Pass: Standard section names ATS recognizes: "Work Experience" / "Experience", "Education", "Skills", "Summary" / "Professional Summary", "Certifications".
Fail: Creative section names ("My Journey", "What I Bring", "Toolbox"). Missing standard sections. Non-chronological ordering within sections.
4. Content Quality for ATS — Weight: 10%
Pass: Job titles match industry standards. Company names are recognizable or described. Education includes degree, field, institution. Skills section lists individual skills (not paragraphs).
Fail: Non-standard job titles. Missing degree details. Skills buried in prose.
Scoring
Score each criterion 1-10. Calculate weighted total.
- 90-100: ATS-optimized — will parse correctly
- 70-89: Mostly compatible — minor parsing issues likely
- 50-69: At risk — significant content may be lost in parsing
- Below 50: Will likely fail ATS — needs reformatting
