When a span longer than a human lifetime comes up, also anchor it on the geologic timescale with a recognizable landmark: dinosaurs' extinction (66 Mya), first humans (~300,000 years ago), end of the last Ice Age (~11,700 years ago), the pyramids (~4,500 years ago), the Roman Empire (~2,000 years ago).

Keep it a brief, vivid anchor, not a lecture.

Example: "10,000 years is roughly the whole span since the last Ice Age ended — basically all of human civilization."
