| description | Write and edit Obsidian vault notes using Obsidian-flavored Markdown. Use when (1) creating new .md notes for an Obsidian vault, (2) editing existing Obsidian notes, (3) adding properties/frontmatter, wikilinks, callouts, embeds, tags, or other Obsidian-specific syntax, (4) converting standard Markdown to Obsidian format, (5) creating presentation slides for Obsidian Slides Extended (reveal.js), or (6) any task involving Obsidian Markdown formatting. |
Obsidian Vault
Write notes and presentation slides using Obsidian-flavored Markdown: CommonMark + GFM + Obsidian extensions.
CLI vs File Editing
Prefer the CLI (obsidian command) for all vault operations — it respects Obsidian's internal state (link resolution, sync, templates, active file context). Most actions can also be done by directly reading/writing .md files when the CLI is unavailable or insufficient.
CLI Syntax
Run obsidian help <command> to discover any command's parameters.
Parameters: parameter=value. Quote values with spaces: content="Hello world".
Flags: boolean switches — just include them to enable (e.g. open, overwrite).
Multiline content: use \n for newlines, \t for tabs.
Targeting a vault — place before the command; defaults to the working directory's vault or the active vault:
obsidian vault=Notes daily
obsidian vault="My Vault" search query="test"
Targeting a file:
file=<name> — resolves by filename (wiki-link logic, no extension needed)
path=<path> — full path from vault root (e.g. folder/note.md)
- Omit both to target the active file
Copy output to clipboard: append --copy to any command.
Behavioral Notes
daily:path — returns the expected path even if the file doesn't exist yet.
diff — versions are numbered newest-first (1 = most recent).
prepend — inserts after frontmatter, not at the very top.
rename — omitting the extension preserves the original. Use move to rename and relocate simultaneously. Both auto-update internal links if enabled in vault settings.
template:read resolve — resolves date, time, title; use title=<title> to supply the value.
orphans / deadends — markdown files only by default; add all for non-markdown.
Common CLI Examples
obsidian daily # open today's daily note
obsidian daily:append content="- [ ] Buy groceries" # append task to daily note
obsidian search query="meeting notes" # search vault
obsidian read file=Recipe # read a file
obsidian tasks daily # list tasks in daily note
obsidian create name="Trip to Paris" template=Travel # create from template
obsidian tags counts # list tags with counts
obsidian diff file=README from=2 to=1 # compare versions
obsidian eval code="app.vault.getFiles().length" # run JavaScript in app
Vault Orientation (Do Once Per Session)
Before creating or editing any note, orient yourself to the vault's conventions. Do not ask the user — discover it.
- Confirm vault root — look for
.obsidian/ directory
- Map top-level folders — note the organizational system (PARA, Zettelkasten, etc.)
- Read templates — check
Templates/ for frontmatter schema and content patterns
- Sample recent notes — scan 10–15 notes for tag style, frontmatter fields, filename patterns, linking conventions
- Store in working memory — apply what you learn to every note you create or edit
This Vault's Conventions (Personal Vault at ~/Vaults/Personal)
Folder structure: PARA-style — Notes/ (flat, all notes live here), Journals/, Templates/, plus top-level index files (1. Projects.md, 2. Areas.md, etc.)
Filename convention: YYYYMMDD-kebab-case-title.md
- Example:
20260412-stanford-cs230-agents-prompts-rag.md
- Use today's date for new notes
Frontmatter schema:
---
title: Human-readable title string
areas:
- "📍 AreaNote"
tags:
- resource/videos
archived: false
source: https://...
author: Name
host: Name
---
areas field: Links to index notes in the vault root using their emoji alias. Common values:
"📍 AI", "📍 Hacking", "📍 Programming"
"📍 macOS", "📍 Astrophotography", "📍 Camping"
"Default" — use when no specific area applies
Tag taxonomy (resource/ namespace for content notes):
resource/videos — YouTube videos, recorded talks
resource/lectures — course lectures, academic content
resource/reference — technical reference, how-to notes
resource/books — book notes
resource/articles — articles, blog posts
resource/podcasts — podcast episodes
resource/meetings — meeting notes
area — area index notes
project — project notes
H1 heading pattern: Always a self-wikilink using the filename as the link target:
# Display Title
archived: false — always include this field; set to true only when archiving.
Reference Files

%%)
- code-blocks.md — Inline code, fenced blocks, nested blocks
Presentation Slides (Obsidian Slides Extended)
Load only the reference file relevant to the current task.
Key Differences from Standard Markdown
Obsidian extends standard Markdown with these features — always use them when writing for an Obsidian vault:
- Wikilinks:
Note Name instead of [text](file.md) (preferred default)
- Embeds:
!Note Name to inline another note's content
- Highlights:
highlighted text
- Callouts:
> [!type] Title blockquote admonitions
- Block references:
Note#^block-id to link to specific paragraphs
- Comments:
%%hidden text%% visible only in edit mode
- Properties: YAML frontmatter with typed fields (
tags, aliases, cssclasses)
- Tags:
#tag inline or in frontmatter, with / nesting (#project/active)
Creating Presentation Slides
When the user wants to create presentation slides for Obsidian Slides Extended (reveal.js plugin):
When to Create Slides
Use slide format when user:
- Explicitly requests slides, presentations, or slide decks
- Asks to convert content to presentation format
- Requests reveal.js or Obsidian Slides Extended output
Slide Creation Workflow
-
Understand requirements:
- From outline/bullets → convert hierarchy to slide structure
- From topic description → ask about duration, audience, key messages
- From existing markdown → reformat with slide syntax
- Interactive planning → collaborate on structure
-
Apply standard structure:
- Title slide
- Agenda slide with vertical sub-slides for each section
- Main sections (horizontal slides)
- Detail slides (vertical slides under main sections)
- Takeaways slide
- Questions/Resources slide
-
Use slide-specific syntax:
- Frontmatter with
theme: blood, verticalSeparator: xxx, hash: true
--- for horizontal slides (main sections)
xxx for vertical slides (sub-topics)
- for visible list items, + for progressive reveals
notes: or note: for speaker notes
- Navigation indicators:
<i class="fa-solid fa-arrow-right"></i> and <i class="fa-solid fa-arrow-down"></i>
-
Follow content guidelines:
- One main idea per slide
- Use vertical slides for details/examples
- Add speaker notes for context
- Use progressive disclosure with
+ fragments
See slides-syntax.md for complete syntax reference and slides-patterns.md for common patterns and examples.
Template: Use assets/slide-template.md as a starting point.
Writing Notes
Frontmatter
Always include YAML frontmatter matching the vault's schema. For this vault:
---
title: Note Title
areas:
- "📍 AI"
tags:
- resource/videos
archived: false
source: https://example.com
author: Author Name
---
Do not add aliases unless the note genuinely needs to be found under a different name — it is rarely used in practice in this vault.
Internal links in properties must be quoted: link: "Target Note".
H1 Heading
The first heading is always a self-wikilink using the filename (without .md) as the link target and the display title as the alias:
# My Note Title
Linking
Prefer wikilinks: Note Name. Use display text for clarity: readable text.
Before linking to a note, verify it exists in the vault. If it doesn't exist, mention it as a candidate for creation rather than creating a broken link.
Link to headings: Note#Heading. Link to blocks: Note#^block-id.
Callouts
Use callouts for tips, warnings, and structured asides:
> [!tip] Key Insight
> Content here with **formatting** and links.
Make foldable with + (expanded) or - (collapsed) after the type: > [!note]-.
Common types: note, tip, warning, info, example, question, quote, todo, abstract, success, failure, danger, bug.
Embeds
Embed notes, headings, blocks, images, audio, and PDFs:
!Other Note
!300
!doc.pdf#page=2
Tags
Use the tags property in frontmatter. Use the resource/ namespace for content notes — pick the most specific type that applies (resource/videos, resource/lectures, resource/reference, etc.).
Tags must contain at least one non-numeric character. Case-insensitive.
Tables
Escape | with \| inside cells when using wikilinks or image sizing:
| Note | Image |
| ---- | ----- |
| Alias | !200 |
Important Rules
- No Markdown in properties — property values are plain text (except internal links in quotes)
- Wikilinks over Markdown links — use
target not [text](target.md) unless interoperability is required
- Block IDs — use only Latin letters, numbers, and dashes (e.g.,
^my-block-id)
- Tag format — no spaces; use camelCase, kebab-case, or snake_case
- Comments — use
%%text%% for content hidden from reading view
- Inline footnotes —
^[text] only render in Reading view, not Live Preview
- Mermaid diagrams — use
internal-link class on nodes to link to vault notes
- Nested code blocks — outer fence must use more backtick/tilde characters than inner
- Filename convention — use
YYYYMMDD-kebab-case.md for new notes in this vault
archived field — always include archived: false; never omit it
