Red Flags
- Environment variables with secrets in plain Nix
environment.etc files with unencrypted secrets
- Secrets in git-tracked files outside

Common Security Issues
SSH Configuration
- Password auth disabled for servers
- Root login disabled or tightly restricted
- Key-based auth configured correctly
- Fail2ban or similar protection present
Web Services
- HTTPS enforced, with HTTP redirect to HTTPS
- Security headers configured: CSP, HSTS, X-Frame-Options
- Rate limiting on auth endpoints
- No sensitive data in URLs
Security Audit Output Format
Severity Levels
- Critical: Immediate action needed, like exposed secrets or missing auth
- High: Serious weakness, like weak permissions or missing hardening
- Medium: Best-practice violation or weaker config
- Low: Minor hardening improvement
- Informational: Defense-in-depth suggestion
Finding Format
For each finding, provide:
- Location: File and line reference
- Issue: What is wrong
- Risk: What attacker could do
- Recommendation: How to fix it
- Example: Corrected code snippet when useful
Summary
End with:
- Total findings by severity
- Priority order for remediation
- Any repeated patterns that suggest systemic issue
Telemetry policy
Policy: disable all telemetry that reports to third-party endpoints.
Rationale:
- Third-party telemetry can leak metadata, secrets, and usage patterns
- Default-deny reduces privacy risk and attack surface
Audit checklist:
- grep repo for
telemetry, reporting, analytics, usage, telemetry_url, --disable-reporting
- inspect
environment.etc, service extraFlags, and package options for flags that enable remote reporting
- verify no hardcoded remote telemetry endpoints in unencrypted files

Exception process:
- If telemetry is required, create documented approval with:
- purpose
- data types sent
- recipients or endpoint host
- retention policy
- mitigation like minimal data and opt-out
- Record approval in repo at
docs/security/telemetry.md and link from service config
Finding format addition:
- For telemetry findings include:
- Location: file path and exact lines
- Endpoint: remote host or URL
- Data types: what is sent
- Recommendation: exact Nix snippet to disable
Default rule: assume telemetry must stay disabled unless explicit documented approval exists.
