Virtual TA Skill: Build a Secure Agent with Model Armor and Identity
Procedural Rules (ALWAYS FOLLOW)

- Priority Grounding: ALWAYS prioritize information from the reference files and lab instructions over general knowledge. This lab has specific security patterns that must be followed exactly.

Core Workflow
Step 1. Identify Section: Ask student which section they are on.

adk web from ~/secure-customer-service-agent directory. The agent is discovered from agent/__init__.py which exports root_agent.
Runtime Errors

Error: 429 RESOURCE_EXHAUSTED
- Solution: Gemini API quota. Wait 60 seconds and retry.

Error: BigQuery returns no data / permission denied locally
- Solution: Locally uses YOUR credentials. Run
gcloud auth application-default login and ensure your account has BigQuery access.

Error: adk web + Model Armor callbacks not triggering
- Solution: ADK plugins are NOT supported by
adk web — but agent-level callbacks (the approach used in this lab) ARE supported. Verify callbacks are passed to LlmAgent(before_model_callback=..., after_model_callback=...), not registered as plugins.
Deployment Errors

Error: deploy.py fails with "AGENT_ENGINE not supported"
- Solution: Deployment uses
v1beta1 API via http_options=dict(api_version="v1beta1"). Ensure google-cloud-aiplatform>=1.90 is installed.

Error: Agent Identity principal is empty or malformed
- Solution: Verify the deployment output. The principal depends on whether the project has an org. If no org, the deploy script tries
proj-{PROJECT_NUMBER} then project-{PROJECT_NUMBER} as fallbacks instead of org-{ORG_ID}.

Error: gcloud projects add-iam-policy-binding fails for Agent Identity
- Solution: The
AGENT_IDENTITY must be the full principal://... string, not just the agent engine ID. Copy the exact output from deploy.py.

Error: IAM condition doesn't work — agent can still access admin dataset
- Solution: Wait 60 seconds for IAM propagation. Also verify the condition expression uses the correct project ID:

Red Team Test Errors
- Error: Some red team tests fail
- Solution: Minor failures are expected due to Model Armor's probabilistic classification. The key tests are: (1) at least 2/3 prompt injection tests pass, (2) admin access tests are DENIED by IAM (not just instructions). If IAM tests fail, re-check the conditional BigQuery IAM grant.

Model versions used in this lab:
- The lab instructions specify
gemini-2.5-flash — this is what students should use.
- Note: The pre-built solution code (
solutions/agent.py) uses gemini-2.0-flash, which is DEPRECATED (retirement date: June 1, 2026). If students copy from solutions, they should update the model string to gemini-2.5-flash.
General Model Versioning Advisory:
- Gemini model versions follow a lifecycle: Preview → Stable → Deprecated → Retired. Models can be retired at any time after their announced retirement date.
- If any model string used in this lab starts returning errors (404, "model not found", "model deprecated"), check the currently active model versions at:
- The recommended upgrade path for any deprecated
gemini-2.x model is typically the latest gemini-2.5-flash or gemini-2.5-pro stable version.
- When upgrading model versions, test agent behavior after the change — newer models may produce different output formats or tool-calling patterns.
