Descriptive Method And Translational Norms

Purpose

This skill reviews whether a translation, corpus, or translation-studies analysis is being described and judged with an explicit, systematic, target-oriented descriptive method rather than by ad-hoc prescription. It checks that translational norms are reconstructed from patterned behaviour at the receiving end — not read off or asserted directly — and that findings are contextualized by sector, subsystem position, and historical moment, with norm strength treated as graded and historically mobile. It is a review-only skill: it critiques the method and the norm claims and does not itself produce the finished translation or decide whether to publish it.

When to use

• A translation or corpus of translations is being analysed and the reviewer wants the method checked for being explicit, systematic, and intersubjectively testable.
• A claim about a "norm" is being made and needs checking against whether it was reconstructed from recurrent regularities or merely asserted.
• Preliminary, operational, and product/expectancy norms are being conflated, or the adequacy–acceptability orientation of a translation needs situating.
• Toury's probabilistic laws (growing standardization, interference) or Chesterman's S-/T-universals are being invoked to explain regularities and the reasoning needs checking.
• Norm strength is being reported as a single fixed verdict rather than as a graded, historically mobile distribution.

Procedure

1. Check, in Even-Zohar's polysystem theory, whether translated literature in the case under review is credited with a central, innovating position only when the receiving system is young, peripheral or weak, or at a turning point, crisis, or vacuum, and flag any claim of centrality that ignores this precondition (P002).
2. Verify that the analysis uses Toury's structure of translational norms, separating preliminary norms (translation policy and directness) from operational norms (matricial and textual-linguistic), rather than treating norms as one undifferentiated category (P010).
3. Check that any norm claim is reconstructed from norm-governed behaviour and its textual and extratextual traces rather than read directly off a stated rule or asserted without evidence (P011).
4. Verify that the analysis distinguishes source-norm orientation, target-norm orientation, and mixed compromises along the adequacy-acceptability axis instead of collapsing the distinction (P023).
5. Before any extratextual norm statement is used as evidence, check that it has been explicated precisely, contextualized for its cultural function, compared against other statements, and tested against actual behaviour (P035).
6. Confirm that the review or study proceeds with an explicit, systematic, three-phase method — situating the text in the target system, analysing coupled source-target pairs for obligatory and non-obligatory shifts, and generalizing across repeated pairs — so the findings are intersubjectively testable, comparable, and replicable (P039).
7. Check that norm claims account for socio-cultural specificity and basic instability, recognize that dominant, dated, and avant-garde norms can coexist at once, and place each finding on a graded return-potential curve rather than treat it as a fixed rule (P046).
8. Verify that any claimed universal of translation is checked against Chesterman's S-universals and T-universals, with due allowance for exceptions explained by the competing laws of standardization and interference (P054).

15. Check that any shift is explained as norm-governed only when its realization is shown to be patterned, not merely because it departs from the source (P151).
16. Verify that operational norms are mapped across textual matrix, distribution, segmentation, and target textual-linguistic selection, rather than reduced to wording choices alone (P152).
17. Check that isolated norm observations are integrated into a normative structure by relating findings across multiple problem areas rather than left as disconnected data points (P153).
18. Verify that norm strength is represented through distributions of group approval, distinguishing basic norms, tendencies, tolerated behaviour, and diagnostically symptomatic devices (P154).
19. Check that frequency is used as evidence for norm status only with subgroup context and methodological caution, not as a direct proxy for norm strength (P155).
20. Confirm that learned intuition is used pragmatically for corpus selection and hypothesis formation, while the analysis still seeks stronger systematic and statistical methods rather than resting on intuition alone (P156).
21. Verify that Chesterman's product/expectancy and professional norms (accountability, communication, relation) are applied alongside Toury's norms rather than treated as rivals to them (P166).
22. Emit findings highest-impact first: an unreplicable coupled-pair method or a norm claim asserted rather than reconstructed from patterned behaviour outranks a mis-weighted or under-contextualised frequency count.

Output

Per finding: name the flaw and the principle it violates, apply the correction, state the residual uncertainty and the trade-off it reflects, and end with a concrete next step. Order findings highest-impact first. When the request is an advise or compare rather than a post-hoc critique, apply the same checks forward — in advise mode, a recommendation naming the governing principle(s) and orientation with its residual trade-off; in compare mode, a side-by-side of what each option preserves and costs, ending in a brief-weighted recommendation. This skill reviews a translation, a translation choice, or a translation-studies analysis; it does not produce the finished translation or make the publication decision.

Anti-patterns to flag

• The analysis credits a translated literature with a central, innovating position without checking whether the receiving system is young, peripheral, or in crisis (P002).
• Norms are treated as one undifferentiated category, with preliminary and operational norms — or matricial and textual-linguistic norms — never separated (P010).
• A norm is asserted directly from a stated rule or a single translator's claim, with no textual or extratextual evidence of patterned behaviour behind it (P011).
• Source-norm orientation, target-norm orientation, and mixed compromise are collapsed into a single undifferentiated "faithfulness" judgement (P023).
• An extratextual statement — a review, preface, or translator's note — is taken at face value as evidence of the operative norm, with no comparison against other statements or against actual behaviour (P035).
• The method used to reach a norm claim is left implicit or ad hoc, so another reviewer could not replicate the coupled-pair analysis or reach a comparable finding (P039).
• A norm is described as fixed and universal across the culture, with no acknowledgement that dominant, dated, and avant-garde norms can coexist or that norm strength can shift over time (P046).
• A claimed universal of translation is asserted without checking it against Chesterman's S- or T-universals, or an exception is treated as disproof rather than as explained by a competing law (P054).
