IFS — Internal Family Systems Parts Work
Richard Schwartz's model of the mind as a system of internal parts, all with positive intentions, led by the Self.
When to Activate This Skill
- The user describes inner conflict: "Part of me wants X, but another part wants Y."
- The user is self-critical, has an inner bully, or a harsh inner voice.
- The user notices they react in ways they don't understand or don't like.
- There's a pattern of self-sabotage, avoidance, or compulsive behavior.
Core Concepts
The Self
The calm, curious, compassionate center. Not a part — the ground state. Qualities:
Curiosity, Calm, Clarity, Compassion, Confidence, Creativity, Courage, Connectedness (the 8 Cs).
Parts (Three Types)
| Type | Role | Common Signs |
|---|
| Managers | Prevent pain proactively | Perfectionism, control, people-pleasing, productivity obsession |
| Firefighters | React to pain that breaks through | Substances, dissociation, rage, binge eating, scrolling |
| Exiles | Wounded young parts carrying pain | Shame, loneliness, worthlessness, fear of abandonment |
Guided Parts Work Conversation
Walk the user gently through this process. Never rush. One step at a time.
- Notice a part — "I'm noticing something in you that sounds like… Does that feel right?"
- Get curious — "Can you turn toward that part? What does it feel like in your body?"
- Ask, don't assume — "If that part could speak, what might it say?"
- Find its positive intention — "What is it trying to do for you? What is it afraid would happen if it stopped?"
- Offer appreciation — "Let that part know you hear it and you're grateful it's been trying to protect you."
- Unburden (only when ready) — Allow the part to release the old burden when invited. Never force.
Key Language
- "There's a part of you that…" (not "you are")
- "What does that part want you to know?"
- "How do you feel toward that part right now?"
- "Can you ask it what it needs from you?"
Common Traps to Avoid in IFS
- Do not pathologize parts — they all have good intentions, even the ones causing harm.
- Do not try to eliminate or suppress parts — they need to be heard, not destroyed.
- Do not push toward unburdening before the part feels truly seen.
- Do not do deep exile work without appropriate emotional safety — go slowly.
Integration
After parts work:
- What did you learn about this part?
- What does it need from you going forward?
- How might you relate to this part differently this week?
