Shell to Ansible Conversion
Shell scripts execute commands imperatively; Ansible declares desired state. Conversion means rethinking operations as state declarations, not translating commands line-by-line. The goal is idempotency: running twice produces identical results.
Core Principle: Don't wrap shell commands in Ansible's shell module. Find the module that achieves the same end state declaratively.
Read the entire shell script and identify major phases (setup, installation, configuration, service management).
Map each shell command to the appropriate Ansible module using the conversion table:
- `mkdir -p` → `ansible.builtin.file` with `state: directory`
- `cp` → `ansible.builtin.copy` for static files
- `cp` with variables → `ansible.builtin.template` with `.j2` files
- `apt-get install` → `ansible.builtin.apt` or `ansible.builtin.package`
- `systemctl` → `ansible.builtin.service`
- `useradd` → `ansible.builtin.user`
Extract hardcoded values as variables:
- Version numbers → `app_version: "1.2.3"`
- Paths → `app_dir: "/opt/app"`
- Usernames → `app_user: "appuser"`
- Ports → `app_port: 8080`
Place these in defaults/main.yml for easy override.
Convert control flow:
- Shell `if` statements → Ansible `when` conditions
- Shell `for` loops → Ansible `loop` constructs
- Use Ansible facts like `ansible_os_family` instead of checking files
Order tasks based on dependencies (create directories before files, install packages before configuring services).
Add handlers for service restarts when configuration files change.
For commands without equivalent modules, use `ansible.builtin.command` or `ansible.builtin.shell` with proper change detection:
- Add `creates:` parameter to skip if file exists
- Use `changed_when:` to detect actual changes
- Set `failed_when:` for proper error handling
Test the conversion:
- Run with `--check --diff` to preview changes
- Execute the playbook
- Verify idempotency: second run should show `changed=0`
