Goal
Catch schema/migration mistakes before they hit production. Focus on
correctness, safety, and performance — in that order.
Checklist per change
Schema / migration safety
- Reversible? Most migrations need a down-migration or a clear
rollback story.
- Backfill plan? Adding NOT NULL on a column with existing rows needs
a default or backfill batch.
- Lock duration? ALTER TABLE on a large table can block writes.
Plan for online migrations (
pg_repack, lock_timeout, etc.).
- Concurrent index creation?
CREATE INDEX CONCURRENTLY for
Postgres on hot tables.
Access control
- RLS / row policies on every new table containing user data.
- Role grants explicit and minimum-necessary.
- Service-role bypass only where Edge Functions need it; never on
client-callable RPCs.
Performance
- Indexes match query patterns (look at WHERE/JOIN/ORDER BY in
related code).
- No SELECT * in hot paths.
- No N+1 — joins, batch reads, or DataLoader pattern.
- Pagination for any unbounded list.
Type safety
- FK types match the referenced column exactly (TEXT vs UUID
mismatches are a recurring drift source).
- Generated columns maintained where applicable.
- Migrations don't drop columns without an archive step.
